(come on, you know you love the adam sandler song no matter how cheese it is...we can still bring it out every single year. you are singing it now, aren't you? come on, people, it's all we've got.) so, i managed to make it though night #1 on Chanukah/Hanukah/Hannukah (whatever, choose your own adventure here) on my own. and we all survived. Well, not entirely on my own...Nanny Haydee bathed them and made latkas. yes! my filipina nanny makes potato latkas!  we lit candles: we opened some presents: ****EDIT: Josh is making this face because apparently buying him Rataoullie wasn't... I think my nanny is going to be harder to toilet train than my daughter. Isabella's always loved the toilet. but way back in the summer, when we tried this before, it was all about the toilet paper and the diego seat and the dora potty. sometimes she'd pee. sometimes she wouldn't. sometimes she'd fart and get so excited, jump up to look at her masterpiece, only to be disappointed. This past week, though, something seemed to change. She's now asking to use the potty. and actually completing the task. she's announcing her business "i needa pee!" sitting down, doing... More »

Hot Topic Friday: The Golden Compass

For my hot topics, i try to stay impartial. Well, as impartial as I can. I try to present all sides of an argument and not really give my own opinion. most of the time it works...but sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, when it's a topic that hits close to home, i can present the facts, sure, but i also feel it's a necessity to tell you how i really feel. Halton's Catholic school board has pulled Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass from its library shelves.   Apparently, an internal memo was sent to elementary principals that said "the book is apparently... this post was going to be about Kate Walsh and her disgustingly amazing 40-year-old body. look at her stomach! just look at it! today was going to be all about inspiration. the body i have (something britney-ish, just not quite as doughy). the body i think i could have (Hayden Panettiere). the body i will never have (Jessica Biel). but alas... yesterday, i stupidly made some jokes on several blogs...several blogs about barf. i joked that i shouldn't get too close...they might be contagious. well, karma is a bitch, my dears. because guess what my son did last night? yeah...i... (we got a good kick out of this one....) do you know what French for FREEZING is??? Every time we set out on a family road trip, we forget how un-fun they are. We forget that our kids don't sleep in the car. We forget that i get carsick unless i'm driving. We forget that the kids will not a agree on a single movie to watch. we forget that isabella throws her sippy cup... More »

Hot Topic Friday: Where Were You When

Tonight we had our annual Thanksgiving dinner with the transplanted Americans-living-in-Canada. The crowd is always the same and it's always great, the food is always amazing, and this year there was a baby to hold. (i love holding babies) We started talking about how yesterday was the anniversary of the death of JFK. and how everyone who was alive during that generation knows exactly where he or she was. home. school. work. people remember what they were wearing. what those around them were wearing. One of our friends' fathers was actually thrown out of class because his teacher thought he... More »

brilliant: (seriously. i'm not kidding. there's not enough love for the dude who invented the umbrella.) not so brilliant: i don't own an umbrella. i'm wet. i hate being wet. i suppose it could be worse. it's supposed to snow tonight. real, actual snow. boo. i hate snow. actually, that's not true. i like snow. i like to sit in my living room and watch giant snowflakes fall while i sit and drink pumpkin spice lattes. i like to ski on snow. (yes, that IS me, skiing in Mont Tremblant in my outfit that i bought in size 14 kids.... More »
(have you read my interview yet?? if you haven't, i highly suggest you visit here...) We have a loose tooth in our house. thank god. I was beginning to feel like we were in a bad episode of Arthur. Remember the one? Arthur's tooth? Where he's the LAST ONE in his class to lose a tooth? There's also a book, in case you were worried. but the loose tooth is just about ALL we hear about. She even went so far as to ask me to take pictures of it so i could sent them to "the tooth fairy" who... More »
I love my 6-year-old. She's an awesome, awesome kid but when it comes to our interests, we have little in common. I like The Office, and she likes The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. I rock out to the stylings of Damien Rice and Pedro the Lion, and she rocks out to High School Musical and Hannah Montana. But when the delivery guy from Alliance Films showed up with an advance copy of the new 2-disc "Shake and Shimmy Edition" Hairspray DVD, I am not sure which of us was more excited. (I'm pretty sure it was me. but... More »
