Thanks to our friends at Alliance Films and Sesame Workshop, I was able to take my little fairy-in-training to see her favorite fairy-in-training.
please mom! no more pictures! I'm busy watching Abby in Wonderland.
I got the chance to talk with Miss Abby Cadabby herself on Friday and got the rundown on her new movie - oops, i mean her adventure - Abby in Wonderland (now available on DVD)
Abby: Hello...is this Miss Ali?
ME: This is Ali...is this Abby Cadabby?
Abby: Yes! This is so weird, i usually use my magic wand as a cell phone but i’m using this little square thing...is real magical. Can you hear me?
ME: I can. Can you hear me?
Abby: I can hear you just fine. Giggle. Giggle.
ME: I hear you have a big exciting weekend planned
Abby: Yes!yes!
ME: Can you tell me a little bit about your movie, Abby in Wonderland.
Abby: Oh, you mean my adventure i had?
ME: Your adventure! Yes!
Abby: You know what? I love fairy tales so much and my mom, she got me this new book and Elmo was reading it to me..but i kind of fell asleep in the middle (giggle giggle). And when i feel asleep i dreamed that i was Alice. And Elmo was the white rabbit...and there were some funny parts. And along the adventure i went on there was the Mad Hatter.and you’ll never guess who it was..
ME: Oh my gosh. Who was it?
Abby: Grover!
ME: No way!
Abby: Giggle giggle! It was so ridiculous. And one of my best friends Zoe was the little dormouse. And then oh, the funny part was cookie monster...was the cookie Cheshire cat
ME: wow. So lots of your friends from Sesame Street are in this adventure...
Abby: Yes. And i mean it was an adventure but it was hard because i lost my wand and i was worried that i wouldn’t get back home without my wand so it was a little sad, but Elmo was with me and he helped me through it, but once i found the wand i knew how important it was for me to get back and the Grouch of Hearts, he was really mean and he wouldn’t give me my wand back, but i tricked him...i’m not going to tell you what i did. I didn’t trick him exactly...i used my BRAINS
ME: I can’t wait to see how you used your brains to get it back.
Abby: Yeah. It’s pretty good. I mean, i had to learn, and i didn’t even realize what i was learning and i was able to pull...wait, what does my mommy said...USE your natural resources
ME: Oh, that’s very smart. That’s what i tell my three-year-old too.
Abby: Yeah, sometimes the answers are right inside of you the whole time.
Me: So, can you tell me about what it’s like to be on sesame street. I hear you used to live in Fairyside Gardens?
Abby: Yeah, i used to live there. Well, it’s different. I mean, the architecture is different, that’s a big word, but it means buildings and everything..like in Fairyside Gardens there’s, like, the lady who lives in a shoe, and there’s a lot of little mushrooms and things like that, people from fairy tales, but on Sesame Street, oh my gosh, it’s great because there are steps that lead up that you can sit on and talk to the people, and the monsters and the birds. I’m the only fairy. Which was a little scary but my friend Baby Bear, he said it’s great here and it really really is cuz there’s so much...um, what’s the word...diversity.
Me: And who were you most excited to meet?
Abby: Oh, i didn’t know who i was going to meet. The first person or thing that i met was Oscar and he was so grouchy, i was a little upset about that. But then i bumped into Big Bird which is easy to do because he’s huge. Giggle giggle. And Big Bird and i both have wings so it was funny to meet someone like that. You know who really, i like, and who really makes me laugh is Elmo.
ME: Oh, i like Elmo too!
Abby: Yeah, he laughs all the time and when he laughs it makes me laugh so laugh and laugh all the time, it’s RIDICULOUS
ME: Ridiculous, yeah, but pretty awesome. To be laughing all the time.
Abby: Yeah, yeah yeah. Do you have children?
ME: Yes, i have three?
Abby: What are they?
ME: WHAT are they?
Abby: Yeah are they boys or girls?
ME: I have two girls and one boy
Abby: No monsters.
ME: No monsters, no fairies, nothing. Just kids.
Abby: Oh, well you can buy some wings and make ‘em fairies in no time. Giggle giggle giggle.
ME: I’m sure i could. [and i did. i MacGuyvered those suckers right onto Isabella. heh] So, i hear that you’re really a fairy-in-training.
Abby: Yeah. I’m a wish fairy. And wish fairies grow up to be fairy godmothers. And it’s a really, really hard job because you’re responsible for making peoples’ dreams come true. And we also have to be really good listeners to help people follow their hearts.
ME: Yeah, that’s a big, big job.
Abby: I have a wand, and i’ve been practicing with it. But....right now, i’m just really good at pumpkins, put it that way.
ME: Well, it’s good to start somewhere, right?
Abby: Well yeah, yeah yeah
ME: And everybody likes pumpkins!
Abby: They sure do. And it’s almost pumpkin season you know!
ME: It is! It must be a busy time for you!
Abby: Giggle giggle giggle. That for sure. Oh boy. You know, my favourite band is Peter and the Pumpkin Eaters. Have you ever heard of them?
ME: I haven’t. I should look into them!
Abby: Yeah, well, they might not have hit the radios here but they are a big hit in Fairyside Gardens. I think you guys have the Wiggles and stuff. And we have Peter and the Pumpkin Eaters.
ME: Yeah, we do have the Wiggles. I have a question for you, Miss Abby, i love love love when guests come to visit Sesame Street. My favourites were when Feist came and when Neil Patrick Harris came. I want to know what guest you would like to see come to Sesame Street.
Abby: Well, let me tell you something. My fairy grandmother told me aobut this person and her name is Carol Burnett. Have you ever heard of her?
ME: I sure have.
Abby: Yeah, she’s a lady that i think is really funny, so i’d like to meet her and..let’s see how else. Oh golly, there are so many interesting people in this world, that’s a tough one. Oh! I know who i’d like to meet...he’s called the Dog Whisperer.
ME: Laughs. Well, listen Abby, i’m going to let you know because i know you have lots of exciting exceiting things to do in Toronto before your big day tomorrow.
Abby: We’re going to visit some children at the hospital right now.
ME: Oh that’s fantastic.
Abby: Yeah. I can’t wait. Because Children are angels on earth helping us be better people.
AND for something really special!!
you can hear the end of the interview right here!

so - you'd say it was different than interviewing Bruce McDonald?
Wow. How cool! Isabella is a very cute fairy.
I would totally be down for a pair of fairy wings right now. At the very least, a wand.
