Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes split; Katherine Heigl not coming back to Grey's Anatomy.

This could also be titled: Things that make me sad; Things that make me happy.

I am saddened to announce the ending of the almost 7-year marriage of actress Kate Winslet and American Beauty director Sam Mendes. In a statement, their lawyers say, "The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children." The couple has a son, Joe, who is 6 and Kate had a daughter, Mia, 9, from a previous marriage.

I am so very pleased to announce that Katherine Heigl seems to have been let go from her role as Izzie Stephens on Grey's Anatomy. She had been scheduled to take off 3 months of maternity leave to care for her daughter Naleigh, the baby that she and husband Josh Kelley adopted from South Korea. And she was supposed to report back to work on March 1st. Only she, just, well, didn't.

Rumor has it that Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes - probably happily - agreed to let her our of her contract. However I felt about her character (which was HATE), Heigl sealed her fate for me when she announced that she wasn't submitting anything for Emmy consideration because the writers hadn't written good enough material for her.

LOST: Dr. Linus

Is there anyone better than Benjamin Linus? I mean, seriously? He is, by far, the very best and more frightening character to ever be on the small screen.

So. LA Ben. Let's talk about that. Dr. Linus talks about Napoleon and Elba and how his exile was a fate worse than death because, you know, Napoleon now had to live his life where he no longer had any power. Ring a bell, anyone?? And substitute teacher John Locke says,"Just sounds like you care about this place, and if the man in charge doesn't, maybe it's time for a change." Interesting. Isn't it? And Ben ultimately chose to help Alex fulfill her dreams instead of his own. Island Ben would have chosen things a little differently, no?

OH. But wait. Ben's dad starts talking about the DHARMA INITIATIVE OMG, meaning that even in the LA timeline, Ben and Roger had, at some point, been on the island. Holy-freaking-crap.

So, back on the island, it seems like now we have confirmation that when NotLocke said to a now-suicidal Richard Alpert, "It's nice to see you out of those chains" that Alpert had maybe, possibly been a prisoner on The Black Rock. And Now Richard is tired of not knowing what's going on and tired of Jacob being full of crap.

HA! Miles knows about Nikki and Paolo and the diamonds!

JACK! Oh my god. He FINALLY realizes how important he is. And Jack, for the very first time ever...had faith that Richard's dynamite will not kill him. And right he was. Jack Shepherd, FTW! And, you are hearing it here first. Jack is the new Jacob. And Locke is the new man in black. Man of science and man of faith now become the man of faith and the man of science. woo!

So, after Benjamin considers running off with NotLocke to the Hydra station to join the baddies because he says that no one will have him, Ilana tells him she will and he goes off with her. Interesting. She must be hiding some of her own skeletons, no?

So, according to Richard, everyone touched by Jacob gets a gift...Are we going to find out what the gifts are? Is everyone's the same...that they are immortal, can't kill themselves, but someone else can? Remember when Michael was trying to kill himself and couldn't?

and somewhere in the world, Sam Worthington is regretting his decision to chew gum on stage. Didn't his mother every teach him anything?

and somewhere in the world, director Roger Ross Williams is giving interviews about getting KANYEd.

and somewhere in the world, someone is wondering why they did the whole Ben Stiller as an Avatar bit, because, seriously? NOT FUNNY. Ben Stiller is hardly ever funny. And while I DID enjoy James Cameron looking all nonplussed and not amused, the only thing more irritating to me was the Interpretive Dancing. or maybe Sarah Jessica Parker.

Other things worth mentioning:

I really miss Billy Crystal's opening montage. He was my favorite Oscar host, by far. I mean, sure, I would love to be in a Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin sandwich but some of their jokes just fell flat. But, they get bonus points for wearing snuggies and for having a very sparkly Neil Patrick Harris guest sing.

Newsflash: Twilight is NOT a horror movie.

Was George Clooney as annoyed as he looked or was there some joke he was in on?

Sean Penn is cryptic on stage and talks about forgetting the same person, which I can only assume is the Academy overlooking his on-again-off-again wife Robin Wright, the same way he forgot to thank her last year during his best actor acceptance speech.

Speaking of acceptance speeches, Sandra Bullock. MY GOD. And while I still hold the opinion that she was getting an award based on a character she was portraying, rather than her acting chops, she gave such a perfect speech, including poking fun of herself by asking, "Did I earn this, or did I just wear you all down?"

THE DUDE ABIDES. And while this year's big four were all considered to be shoe-ins, so we all knew that Bridges was going home with the Best Acor award for his role in Crazy Heart (which I LOVED), I was so happy that he won this. And am happy to know that he actually IS the dude in real life too. Man.

PS: Leaving Farrah Fawcett off of James Taylor's tribute to the stars we lost in 2009 was uncool.

Douche of the year award goes to the costume designer winner who so graciously said, "well, I already have two of these!" Way to keep it classy Sandy Powell.

Oscars 2010 Fashion: The Good, The Bad, and the Oompa Loompa

Oh, SJP. Oh, no no no no no. Yes. I do find yellow to be a fantastic color on the red carpet. But, this? This was just a mess of Chanel. The tanorexic skin color, the hair, the dress. It was all just a big NO for me.

THE GOOD!

Her hair, her makeup, and the top of this dress were perfect. She looked amazing. I was NOT crazy about the bottom, however. Was just pretty meh.

I was, by far, the most surprised by Cameron Diaz. Usually looks ridiculous on the red carpet and this year, she proved me wrong. She still bugs me and I'm not sold on her lip color, but her dress was stunning and her hair looked amazing.

Kristen Stewart CAN clean up! It's not my favorite dress, but it's the nicest thing I have EVER seen her wear.

I LOVED this dress. I just wish she had chosen a color other than her skin tone. It's super flattering and it's just lovely. I really liked it!

As with Sandra Bullock's look, the hair makeup and top of the dress were perfect, the bottom was just a little too frump for me.

STUNNING. Love the color, the shape, everything.

THE BAD!

boobs. that's really all there is to say here.

Oh, Diane Kruger. Oh no.

I LOVE Maggie. Love her. But this dress looks like it belongs on the beach. and the lip color? Not my favorite.

Miley almost gets it. I thought the bottom of the dress was lovely and age appropriate, but the stop of this dress? What is even going on here? It looks too tight and just bizarre. Did NOT like this look at all.

I did NOT get Zoe Seldana's dress. There was almost too much going on here. The gold at the top mixed with the pinata material purples at the bottom. Not my thing.

LOST: Sundown

I'll be honest, other than Kate, Sayid is probably my least favorite LOST character. I have always found him kind of too infatuated with Nadia. Oh my god, Nadia this and Nadia that. Sayid, someone super complicated and complex because he was once a torturer who did bad things but now is a good guy, you know, until it comes to beating someone to a pulp, and then he comes in super handy. But, I sort of realize now that the Nadia fixation serves a very important purpose...it's how NotLocke aka THE smoke monster gets Sayid to play for the baddies....He promises that Sayid will be able to be reunited with his long lost DEAD love. Interesting.

"What if I told you you could have anything you wanted? What if I said you could have anything in the entire world?"

"I would tell you that the only thing I ever wanted died in my arms and I'll never see her again."

"But what if you could?"

Also, you know, there was a kick-ass fight scene between the torturer and the ninja. awesome.

Some other important things happened this week...like Claire going to the temple (of doom) to talk to deliver messages because, you know, NotLocke is not allowed, due to the ring o dirt. NotLocke promised that she'd reunite Claire and baby Aaron...she was an easy sell too. Also, is Kate now on the dark side, um, by accident?

Miles provides the one-liners while Hurley is absent. "Welcome to the circus."

Claire's reunion with Kate was probably a lot more creepy than Kate expected.

Keamy aka THE dude who killed Alex shows up in sideways world! AWESOME! Also? Jin in the meat locker!

Also, we learn that NotLocke cannot be stabbed, even if Dogen said he could. Chances are good that Dogen sent Sayid out there to be killed. Or not. I mean, he did tell him to do the stabbing before the talking, but NotLocke spoke first...so, I guess we'll never know...on account of Dogen being, um, DEAD.

Also? Where is Sawyer?

Well, yesterday we discussed my favorite Oscar looks, and I can assure you, it was NOT an easy task. There were tons of dresses that I have loved over the years. And, of course, I always think about what *I* would wear if I got to go to the Oscars. oh like you never...

Today;s list, however, was a simple one for me. There have been MANY MANY bad looks over the years...but these ten...didn't even take much research. I remembered all of them. ALL OF THEM. Because, good lord, they are BAD NEWS. Again, not in any order...

Tragedy for the Osmond Family

I grew up a little bit obsessed with the Osmonds. I have mentioned many, many times that Donny Osmond was my first celebrity crush. and I won't tell you how many times I sat through Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat just so I could watch Sir Donny in a loincloth (rawr). And it wasn't just Donny. I liked Marie too (with the exception of her hair in that Nutrisystem commercial where it forgot that it's not 1982). And, truly, I feel like this family has just seen enough tragedy.

On Saturday, when Donny simply stated, "Please pray for my sister and her family," when reports started swirling that Marie's 18-year-old son Michael had leapt eight stories to his death, I was shocked. and then on Sunday, when Marie released this statement, "My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time," I was heartbroken for the family.

Michael, a first-year student at The Fashion Institute of Design, had been battling depression for quite some time, and apparently noted that as the reason for his suicide. In 2007, he had entered a rehab facility, but the reason was never disclosed.

Today I will do exactly what Michael's uncle Donny asked us to do...pray for Marie and her family.

Britney Turns the Weave Around...

There is actually a lot to discuss today...The Bachelor finale (will he choose Tenley or Vienna? All sources point to only one...), Marie Osmond's son's suicide, Jude Law meeting his 5-month-old daughter Sophie, but, you guys, something has caught my eye today. Something pretty shocking.

I mean, look at HER WEAVE.

Usually we are used to seeing this.

(shudder)

or videos where her weave is falling out...

But...ALAS! She looks good. Good for her. I really hope she's turning other things around, not just her hair.

LOST: Lighthouse

Candidates do what they want, it seems...Hurley and his "Why don't YOU go back into the courtyard." But this episode was filled with good Hurley quotes including comparing Jacob to Ob-Wan Kenobi, but my favorite one was "It's bad enough you ordered me to write down way too much stuff, and I just lied to a samurai"

So, Claire is crazy. And she seems even crazier than her doppleganger Danielle Her lair is creepy and she keeps some strange skull(?) in the bassinet. Also, it seems that she was taken to the ~~pit of despair~~ temple and given the same test - and failed - as Sayid. Also, her father told her that the others had Aaron and then her friend told her. Interesting. And her friend is...not John, she says. So, she's playing for the man-in-black's team and has been for quite some time. oh, oh and when she said with that terrible hair and creepy smirk, "if there's one thing that can kill you out here, it's infection." Nice...

THE LIGHTHOUSE. oh my god. This scene made the entire episode worth watching and had me on the edge of my seat. Hurley's instructions are to move the dial to 108, which belongs to someone who we don't know named Wallace and, interestingly, is the sum of the numbers...4 + 8+ 15+ 16 + 23 + 42. But Jack moves it to 23, his own number, where he sees the house he grew up in.

And then he has a temper tantrum and destroys the fancy mirrors. nice one, Jack. Unless this is exactly what Jacob wanted to happen...maybe Jacob wants to prevent said person from coming to Island...

So, obviously we go to the caves for a reason...I'm just not sure what it is. So Hurley can make some joke about those being THEIR bodies? To look at Christian's destroyed coffin? To wonder where in the hell Christian's body actually is? hmmmmm?

In LA world, Dogen shows up at Jack's son's audition (and, you know, Jack has a son) and Jack finds his dad's will and it includes a certain Claire Littleton in it and Jack had his appendix out when he was a kid and not taken out by Juliet in season, what, 4? hmm. I'd be interested to know who David's mother is...my bets are on Juliet.

Shannon's inhalers. Well, they don't give us anything big...but they do give us Shannon's inhalers. You are awesome, producers.

and, wait, who is coming to the Island? DESMOND? Please, I need me some Desmond!

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart May or May Not Be Together...

"It is extremely difficult but we are together, yes. We can't arrive at the same time because of the fans. It goes crazy. This was supposed to be a public appearance as a couple but it's impossible. We are here together and it's a public event but it's not easy. We have to do all this stuff to avoid attention."

OH YES.

Teenagers everywhere are in mourning this week after Robert Pattinson dropped THIS bombshell that he and Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart are, in fact, a couple to The Sun. Reactions are kind of hilarious. Some are shouting, "DUH..tell us something we don't know!" Some are shouting, "It's not true! This interview is a fake! RobPatz doesn't talk like that AT ALL!" and some are saying it's not true because of, well, semantics, and that he never said that they were A COUPLE, but rather that they are attending this event 'together' and that the reporter just made an assumption.

What do you think? Together? Not together? Or do you totally just not care at all about these two?

"Don't you get it? You're a rat in a maze!" says George Noyce, an inmate (or patient as Ben Kingsley's creepy Dr. Cawley stresses several times throughout the film) in Ward C, the maximum-security wing of this lovely asylum for the criminally insane, Ashecliffe. But, really, it's US, the viewers, who are the real rats here. We are all just caught up in this game of where the Sixth-Sense-ish "twist" we were promised is going to show up.

It's 1954 and US Marshalls Teddy Daniels (Leonardo Di Caprio) and his new partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), take us all off the ferry boat - the only way on, or off - and onto Shutter Island to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Rachel Solondo, But from the moment they (and we) step foot onto that island, nothing seems right.

Dr. Cawley is elusive and unhelpful, not allowing access to certain files. Solondo's primary doctor left on the ferry that morning, even though his patient had almost literally vanished into thin air. Teddy starts suffering from serious migraines and has dreams of his time spent liberating Dachau and of his dead wife, played by Michelle Williams. Rachel's cryptic message of "Who is 67?" leaves everyone wondering what is actually going on here?

While interviewing other patients at Ashecliffe, one of them scribbles RUN across Teddy's notebook. Something is amiss here and Teddy, despite his head full of memories and migraines, wants to uncover it. Turns out he isn't only there to find Rachel Solondo, the woman who drowned her three children but has no memory of it. No, Teddy is convinced Andrew Laeddis, the man who set the fire that killed his wife, is also on Shutter Island somewhere.

I don't want to give away too much, but I will tell you that some of the plot twists and surprises were just not all that surprising, and my sister and I were pretty sure where the movie was going, but getting there was still just as suspenseful and satisfying. And Scorsese (with the help of Dennis Lehane's novel by the same name) builds deep, intense, and moving characters and places them against a visually stunning background.

And of course, now we want to go back and see it again, just to look for clues.

LOST: The Substitute

Oh, this episode was good. So good. Some people are disappointed in this season, but I think they are doing it right; the slow build. And there was much good in this one.

Like:

THE NUMBERS! I'm sorry, but really, the numbers!

We learn that each person is on the Island for a reason. Each one is a candidate. For...a Jacob replacement, maybe? Each person has a number. A certain person's lottery numbers. A certain set of numbers that needed to be plugged into a computer. (PS...4 is Locke, 8 is Reyes, 15 is Ford, 16 is Jarrah, 23 is Shepherd, 42 is Kwon) (PPS. Which Kwon? And why doesn't Kate have a number?)

And NotWalt (not to be confused with NotLocke. heh) runs through the jungle! and talks about the rules! What are the rules? Whose rules? Is this young Jacob? Aaron? Are Aaron and Jacob the same person?

And then there's a black rock and a white rock on the scales. and NotLocke tosses the white rock into the water. AHA! I get it! Jacob is dead. Jacob was the white rock. The Smoke Monster/NotLocke is the black rock. THE BLACK ROCK. Interesting....

And BEN. Oh my god, you guys. Ben. Ben in LA teaches European History and he rants about coffee pots and wears vests and shakes hands with John Locke the substitute. AWESOME. and back on the island Ben gives eulogies..."John Locke was a believer. He was a man of faith. He was a much better man than I will ever be and I'm very sorry I murdered him."

And, oh, Sawyer. I love how he growls and reluctantly follows NotLocke, even though he totally knows he's not Locke, and says "I guess I should put on some pants." LOVE. And then Sawyer almost dies on Jacob's ladder and NotLocke saves his life and convinces him to choose what's behind door #3.

On Tonight: The Bachelor

So, last week, Jake was left without having to make a decision at all because Miss Ali chose her job (at Facebook, ps) over Jakie-poo. Otherwise known as 'pulling an Ed.' Thanks to some early-season spoilers, I knew she was leaving, but I honestly think by both of their reactions - staged at the entire things was - I think both of them were heartbroken and that Ali was probably going to be Jake's choice at the end. And I am saddened by this, because I liked them together.

But have no fear, because tonight you will get a show that was even more stages than Ali's leaving....her phone call to Jake, telling him she made a mistake. Otherwise knows as 'contract obligations.'

Please to note: It doesn't get much more fakey fake than this, folks. Why is she in a hotel room? Why hasn't she gone home yet to, yanno, WORK? and notice Jake's watch situation. not on, on. ooh. Good EDITING, there, Bachelor. Interesting, obviously...because they are trying to make this show as drama-filled as possible.

Speaking of drama...can we talk about the whole dead grandmother coming out from the grave to approve of Jake? WHA?

Oh my god. And the creepy dad listening at the door when Vienna and Jake were making out?

Also, I would really like, for once, to have someone on the show who was all, "okay, my family is insane and I really don't care all that much what they think of you" instead of every. single. person. to ever be on the show who is BEST FRIENDS with her father AND her mother and puh-lease, this is not REAL life, you guys.

I am completely meh about the three girls that are left. Tenley, I think, is my favorite. Except for her hideous dancing. THE DANCING. I hope she never does that again.
