The SAG Awards Fashion Roundup!

Another weekend....and another award show. I like the SAG Awards - maybe because Coach Reeves from The White Shadow always shows up - I'm not sure. I just think that actors voting for each other give a truer sense of who deserves what.

It was a great night for fashion. There were some major standouts and some wtf's...which always makes things interesting. Here is my take - and I know at least one will have you wanting to smack me!!!

I'm not including a pic of my George and the wrestler...because frankly, he's been replaced with Jean Dujardin. And lest you think I'm band wagon jumping...after 10 minutes of The Artist, I was thinking George who? Wasn't that the guy from Facts of Life or something?

Let's follow up with my worsts of the night....Rose Byrne from Bridesmaids. When Beautiful People Attack! Why? It's just all so wrong. I wanted to like it - I did. But it's like hummus...I want to but I can't as hard as I try.

Then there's poor Kaley Cuckoo something from Big Bang Theory. Again - so pretty and SO bad. Wedding dress gone awry. The hair? Amazing for Coachella...but for the red carpet. It looks heavy...I keep waiting for her head to fall forward... Cuckoo indeed.

There were some good Glee moments - like Naya Riviera. God she looked amazing. So did Lea Michelle but she just annoys me at these things so I"m not including a picture.

And there were some really bad Glee moments. Like Heather Morris....and this little number from Amber Riley (who I loooove). But it looked like she gift wrapped her hooters for someone. Bows are bad. Always. I am NO fashion person - but I can tell you that bows are bad.

One person I couldn't take my eyes off was Viola Davis. Not because I liked her dress because honestly I didn't at all. But her SKIN! Other worldly that skin was last night. And she is a beautiful speaker!

Best body? Hello Kyra Sedgwick. Guys - she's pushing 50! Married to Kevin Bacon for 23 years! If I wore that dress? I wouldn't need a purse. I could carry my id and lipstick in the fat roll that would show up right where her tattoo is. Amazing.

We can't forget Angie. Sorry I know I'm biased but I thought she looked killer last night. She looked happy, relaxed AND was hanging with Tilda Swinton. You know the two of them sit around and compare who is perceived as weirder. The only thing I didn't like was how eerily similar Brad and Angie's hair looked. He's losing it for me with this hair.

Here's the one where we will differ. Meryl. I LOVED it. It could be because this is the kind of get up that my step-mother could also pull off. It takes a strong, confident woman to be able to wear something like this and it works for her. Bring on the opposition - because I'm guessing I'm alone on this one.

My best of the night? I had two. The first one - I'm sort of shocked at. When she first got out of the limo I said to my sister 'god when will she not dress like a 90 year-old'...but then I took it all in and I think Michelle Williams looked incredible! And again she brought her BFF Busy Phillips - I love that. I think she does it because Busy knows people...it's so annoying bringing someone to a party who knows no one and then you have to hang with all night isn't it?

But my top pick? Emma Stone. Love. Everything about her and her dress choice. I just wish she'd brought Andrew Garfield with her. And that they'd made out at the table...and ...well you get it. She's adorable...right down to the shoes!

One thing to note. I didn't include a picture of Sofia Vargara (who looked just incredible) because it's starting to kill me to see her and Julie Bowen on the red carpet. You know Bowen goes home and hits her head against the wall cause she gets topped every single time.

The Race is ON!!!

The Oscar nominations came out this morning and while there were a few surprises....by this point with every award show under the sun happening before, everything was pretty locked up.

Before I had Will, I can say that I would see every nominated film in the top six categories (picture, director, actor, actress and supporting actor and actress) every year. I take my movie watching pretty seriously. This year, I'm way and I mean WAY behind. And sadly, the nominee that I was most excited for was Am I A Man or a Muppet for Best Original Song.

So - let me give you my predictions....

Best Picture - The Artist; The Descendents; The Help; Hugo; Extremely Loud; War Horse; Midnight in Paris; Moneyball; Tree of Life. My prediction. The Artist. I just saw it...like an hour ago...and I loved it! I've only seen two others from the list - Midnight in Paris and The Descendents and I loved them both.

Best Actor - Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Gary Oldman, Jean Dujardin and Demain Birchir. People are saying my man George is a lock. But I'm going for Dujardin from The Artist. Mostly because I want to hear him speak in french. No honestly, the emotion he gets across with just his face is INSANE. George was good in the Descendents but meh...we've seen it.

Best Actress - Meryl. Why bother naming the others.

Best Supporting Actor - Jonah Hill; Kenneth Branagh; Nick Nolte; Max Von Sydow and Christopher Plummer. Is anyone else singing 'one of these things is not like the other' right now?? Jonah Hill??? Please - this is all Plummer....for his lifetime of work. Hello Captain Von Trapp!

Best Supporting Actress - Melissa McCarthy!!!! Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, Berenice Bejo, Janet McTeer. I have only seen Bridesmaids on this list (god...who am I!)...and I'd love her to win more than anything...but I think it will be Spencer or Bejo.

Best Director - Scorcese - I have as much desire to see Hugo as I do to naked mud wrestle with Carrot Top but I'm told it's brilliant and it won't win Best Picture so they'll give it to him.

But REALLY - come on. We only watch the Oscars for fashion....so let's all tune in at the end of February and talk fashion - Brad and Angie; George and the wrestler; no Madonna - wahoo! Hopefully Kermit will make an appearance since that seems to be how I roll these days.

Steven Tyler sung the US National Anthem at a football game today. It's all over the news with how awful it was. Ummm hello. Let's repeat the sentence. Steven Tyler sang the national anthem - what the hell did they expect? He's not Jennifer Hudson for godsakes.

When it's right...it's soooo right. I love the U.S. National Anthem - and this is my favourite...sorry Whitney - you were awesome but this was J Hud's first public appearance after her mother was murdered. And she was incredible!!!

How about this kid? Poor kid...singing her lungs out and then the mic dies. The crowd picked it up...a little heart warming (except for the beyotch who started laughing!)

Let's not think that Canadians can't butcher their own anthems....oh man....really??

So. Any that I'm missing?? Who is singing it at this year's Super Bowl. If Madonna is the half time show - one can only imagine???

Trouble in Paradis??

This is one celebrity duo that I wouldn't have guessed would split...but word is that Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are ending their 14 year partnership (they never married). Sad. They have two kids - Lily Rose and Jack (which just hit me as very Titanic!). Apparently they should have stayed in France because rumour is once they moved to Hollywood, they started drifting apart. C'est dommage! But maybe he and Winona can get back together! He can just fix up that tattoo again!

In other gossip tidbits - JayZ has decided to not call women bitches anymore because of the love of his daughter and how he doesn't want anyone referring to her that way. Hey Jay...FYI ....you had a mother first - were you cool with calling her a bitch? Just saying...

Pregnancy rumours AGAIN for Jennifer Aniston and this time...I'm buying them. The normally way over photographed Aniston has been MIA for over a month now. So either she's decided to lay low and hide her growing bump from the paps...OR she's in deep research for her next movie role - maybe a romantic comedy? Maybe she'll be a crazy single girl looking for love?

Celeb chef Paula Deen has come out and said she has Type 2 diabetes. People are outraged that she didn't come clean as she peddles her butter fueled recipes. Hellooooo - at what point did you think deep fried cheesecake was good for you?

Rumours are swirling that Rihanna has been quietly sleeping with Chris Brown for over a year now. Remember Chris Brown - the one that beat the crap out of her? I'm sad about this as well but it's just proof that celebs are just like you and me (with better clothes and more money) and make bad decisions when it comes to men.

Oh and Cindy Crawford's ten-year old daughter has started modelling for Versace's kids line. Oh course she is - she wouldn't be doing it for Old Navy would she? And really why wouldn't Versace have a kid's line? I can see the safety-pin dress being a huge hit at sunday school.

Golden Globe Roundup!

It was Hollywood's big night and all eyes were on Ricky Gervais to see who he'd insult...to hear all of his zingers....and frankly? YAWN. He was dullsville!

Who should host next year? Seth Rogen. He stole the show with one line.

I love how Kate giggled. She's a trooper. But you're here for fashion. I know you are.

I have one small issue. My photo agency is a little, tiny bit CHEAP so I don't have access to all the pictures...so yes, I do have some people missing from my best and worse BUT I think I'm capturing the highlights.

Best of the Night???

I have to be honest, I went to bed thinking no one is really sticking with me. I don't think it was an amazing night for fashion.

My favourite was Jessica Alba. I just thought she was incredible - she glowed.

My next favourite? Rooney Mara. Yes she looks like she has a broom handle up her ass at all times but I thought the dress was beautiful - I want to wear it. And I love her hair and skin.

My other faves, who I don't have access to pictures of? (google people...google). Viola Davis, Kristen Wigg (although it was a ton like her Emmy dress...but I love the hippy feel to the whole get up) and I'm still torn on the Salma Hayek one. The other trend I loved was young actresses looking fresh and young - the two girls from Modern Family and Clooney's co-star in The Descendents. They all looked their age and beautiful (but poor Sarah Hyland...her zipper failed on the red carpet!!).

The worst???

Well thank you Golden Globe gods for putting the two worst dresses on stage at the same time to hand out an award. I went to see Disney Princesses on Friday night. These two could have played the two wicked step-sisters. Both so wrong on two beautiful women.

My next worst?

Michelle Williams. And it pains me to say it because I love her. Her speech was amazing. Why the headband? Why the Morticia Adams dress?

(sorry this was the only version I could find).

But hands down the WORST of the night (Perez Hilton...are you insane for calling this the best???) was Lea Michelle. Go on ...google it. I wish she'd stop trying so hard. I do.

Honourable mentions for the night should go to ....

Uggie the dog from The Artist....although I personally wouldn't have worn the collar with the bow-tie...but that's just me.

Best couple of the night??? So easy! George Clooney shocked the crowd when he ditched that wrestler broad and introduced the world to his new partner in crime....the one chick who will never ask for a wedding ring...a lowly mom blogger from Canada.....that's right...ME...

Weekend Roundup! The B's Have it!!!

Lock up your sons...likely the coolest little girl has arrived. Beyonce and Jay-Z welcomed their daughter yesterday morning in New York City. It's been hard to determine if her name is Ivy Blue or Blue Ivy. Hmm. I really hope it's option #1 because Blue Ivy sounds like a Batman villain or a really crappy perfume. Regardless - the rumour was that no one was allowed on the maternity ward and that Jay brought in dozens of bottles of red wine. This makes my father's token one can of Guinness for me post-delivery seem really weak!

In other news, Drew Barrymore is engaged!!! I hope you can feel the sarcasm behind my exclamation points. I love Drew and I'm happy for her but I'll be honest here - I don't really understand why people continue to get married. Why don't you just live together? By the third bachelorette party, don't you feel a little bit silly. It's just me I guess.

And lastly, Brad Pitt showed up at the Palm Springs Film Fest sporting a cane. He said he slipped with Viv in his arms and took one for the team and ended up hurting his leg. This is all well and good and the man can even pull off a cane. But can we talk about something else? Angie just keeps getting better looking!! (and for you team Jen's out there - Jen too). And if you're a hater...get the new issue of Marie Claire - read the article and look at the pictures and try to hate her. I've now decided - if I could only have Brad or Angie...I may just have to switch teams.

Yawwwwwn - The Holiday Celeb Gossip Edition

Where the HELL were the celebs this holiday season?

It was a quiet one for gossip with the exception of Katy Perry and Russell Brand splitting. Frankly, not sure this is a surprise. He's a recovering alcoholic and well...she is not. I think this combined with differing careers would be pretty massive to overcome. No?

Another tidbit - apparently Jessica Biel will soon become Jessica Timberlake. (For SURE she'll change her name...come on...she's put up with a lot of crap to get here!).

Excitement for me this holiday? Oprah is back! Her new show Oprah's Next Chapter or something premiered to great numbers on New Years night. She interviewed Steven Tyler and I loved it. My friend facebooked me and said she was starting to look like Steve - I said I've been told that I look like Robert Plant - so we're going to dress as aging rockstars for Hallowe'en this year. Speaking of aging rockstars...You must check out this picture of Tyler that Perez Hilton posted. Watch your eyes...there are moobs involved.

You know it was a quiet one in celeb gossip when a story broke about Clint Eastwood having a friend in a squirrel he calls Lola. He leaves the door open in his office and the squirrel comes to visit. Here's an admission - my friend and I - when we were very, VERY young, found a dead squirrel and kept it in a box for a few days. We dressed it in doll clothes. I kid you not. (I'm actually FBook friends with her...I wonder if she remembers). So while people are mocking Clint - I say good on you dude. At least the thing is alive.

Here's hoping 2012 picks up a bit - not sure which is more boring - squirrels or Jessica Biel. (oh look there's me going to hell in a handbasket).

The Christmas Movie Countdown

It's going to be a very quiet Christmas in our household. We'll do the morning thing with my dad and step-mom but then it's just the boy and I for Christmas Eve and Christmas Night. At first..*sniff* I was sad...but now, I've decided - it's turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stove top....and some movies. I'm hoping that his LeapPad will keep him occupied so I can fit a bunch in.

I'm not talking Elf or A Christmas Story or It's a Wonderful Life. Nope - cheesy Christmas chick flicks. Here are my top five .....

5. Bridget Jones's Diary

Ugh! All embedding disabled! Boo! But come on...Mark Darcy's Christmas sweater? The reindeer...so good.

4. Step-Mom

Okay so I won't be watching this this year. I've decided I must never watch it again to save myself from getting more eye creases from crying. So here - Merry Christmas...will someone make me a cape please?

3. Serendipity

Please. It's Cusack. It's New York. It's Aidan (well as a Yanni like musician) It's a no-brainer! And it's made me realize that my dream job is to write obits. I'm not kidding.

2. The Family Stone

This is what I'll be watching on Christmas night. Again - the ending kills me like Step-Mom but the rest is so good...every part of it. Because you know what? I have a freak flag too...and I'm going to fly it more this coming year!

I love a comeback story. Remember Hoosiers? Rocky? Remember The Titans? Well - if you love a good comeback..how can you not be pumped for our girl Britney Spears who announced her engagement this weekend to her former manager, Jason Trawick. She announced it on Twitter y'all!!

I go back and forth on this guy...sometimes, don't yell, I find him hot in a creepy kind of way. Other times, I'm physically repulsed...but hey...he seems like he treats her well and he's brought her back from hell.

Remember the Vegas wedding? The head shaving? Any kidding aside, she was past the brink and he and her family brought her back from it. (Taking notes Mr and Mrs Lohan???)

So I for one am raising a glass to Brit Brit. I'm going to toss back from cheetos in her honour and say CONGRATS! Can't wait to see her boys in the wedding pictures. Do you think K-Fed will be there?

I'm also raising a glass for Vanessa Bryant, Kobe's soon to be ex-wife. She's pushing him to the curb after yet another tale of his infidelity came forward. I heard that one of the other player's wives told her. Apparently, they have a bit of a pact, where if anyone hears anything - they come forward, expecting the same in return. I like that pact. I like that she had the balls to leave him this time and didn't accept another massive piece of jewellery as an "I'm sorry".

We Looked at Hot...Now Let's Look at Cool!

Time Magazine named their person of the year yesterday - it's The Protester. The pop culture person in me says zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Thankfully, Joel Stein from Time felt the same and decided to name The Coolest Person of the year. And **cue drumroll**...it's Ryan Gosling! Are you surprised? No way. Did you see Crazy, Stupid, Love?

Stein says this is why he chose him...

So the 2011 Coolest Person of the Year is a man who is tough but emotional. A movie star who broke up a fight on the streets of Manhattan and was also caught walking down a Manhattan street playing a Strumstick, which is like a ukulele only ukulelier. An Oscar nominee who also smokes, tags graffiti and has a predilection for posing with a fist to the camera but makes dioramas and takes public ballet classes alongside little girls too. He's the only actor since Andy Kaufman to work as a waiter after making it in show business. One who has a rock band that spent a month accompanying a children's marionette show in Los Angeles. He is a man who caused a protest outside our very own Time & Life Building when People magazine chose Bradley Cooper instead of him as the Sexiest Man Alive. I doubt Cooper is cool enough that his fans would object to his loss of Coolest Person of the Year by protesting in front of our building and blocking foot traffic with an annoying publicity swarm (Sixth Avenue and 50th Street, northwest corner most visible).

HILARIOUS!!!! They also forgive him for speaking with a Brooklyn accent even though he's Canadian.

Look - Ryan Gosling is cool, hot...and actually - let's stop talking...watch this...freeze frame at the 19 second mark and get back to me later! (oh god love Youtube for making the ABS the freeze frame already!!!

Two celeb stories came out yesterday....leading me to ask 'what is really hot??'

Mens Health Magazine released it's list of the 100 Hottest Women of All Time. Topping the list? Jennifer Aniston. Hmm. She is gorgeous - absolutely. But of all time??? Hello - Raquel Welch? Ursula Andress? I saw a picture of Hedy Lamar in the paper this weekend (who didn't make this list) and she has stuck with me - absolutely stunning. It's a very odd list when Britney Spears is hotter than Sophia Loren. I'm just saying.

On the same day - Vogue Magazine released it's cover with 62 year-old Meryl Streep on the cover. STUNNING. Why can't everyone age like Meryl? She's so talented, so funny, so beautiful and natural.

So what makes someone hot? Not sure - but I would have had Meryl beating out Madonna (#5?)...she can do a British accent way better.

Friday WTF - The Today Show Edition!

It's been a very quiet week at The Dish...apologies but I've been sick. I've spent the better part of the last two days on the couch with the flu and a heating pad on my back. Honestly - I feel like I'm 90. The best part of being sick though is being able to watch my friends on the Today Show. My love of this show is well documented here....remember Meredith's goodbye?? - sob! (oh and looking for a Christmas present for me? There's a 60 year retrospective book out!! Must. Get. That. Stat.)

Anyway - this morning I woke up ready to join the world - albeit at 3:15am when my kid came down the hall to get into my bed (mommy - I promise tomorrow night I'll sleep in my own bed...ugh) and the first news story I saw on CNN? Ryan Seacrest in talks to replace Matt Lauer on the Today Show! WTF?? Seriously??

How insulted is Matt right now? He and Mer are totally having lunch today and slagging NBC. Sure there's fluff on there - just yesterday Matt was killing himself while some endangered ostrich was chasing after Al...but he is also a serious journalist. Is Ryan Seacrest? No. He's an entertainment reporter. What's next? Simon Cowell to host the NBC Nightly news? Come on people. Ryan Seacrest interviewing Newt Gingrich? Not likely.

If Matt was to retire? It's obvious - the Coop. Hands down. Who else? Is there anyone else?

And the question is this. All these people keep leaving...but when the hell will Willard Scott? I'm just saying!

Weekend Roundup - Eye Bleach Needed

Well. It happened. The new TLC show Virgin Diaries premiered tonight.

Many MANY of you commented in on the teaser post I had for you last week. How many of you dared to watch the whole show??

It was the ultimate train wreck and an hour of my life that I will never get back. But - I learned some things.

1. Do not bring up your plans for marriage and babies (or the fact that you're a virgin) on a first date. Save it till the third maybe. Oh wait...I knew that. How did this chick not?!

2. The TLC editors are geniuses for managing to put in every stereotype of virgins/people not getting action... there were cats, weird relationships with mothers, tears, more cats, cougars...it was ridiculous.

3. Espousing your virginity while at the same time massaging your 30 year-old roommates like you're at summer camp is awkward.

4. Having every guest at your wedding know that you're virgins and on your way to do it after the event can prove for awkward high fives...and your dad saying 'he wished he could be a fly on the wall.' Ew.

5. Getting shut down by a 35 year-old virgin actively seeking to lose his virginity is not going to shoot your stock up 'momma' - I'm just saying.

6. Chewing on your new husbands face the same way you eat a ice cream cone later...is not a good indicator that you can kiss. Didn't you practice on your Leif Garrett pillowcase for godsakes?...not that I know anyone who did that.

7. Having your mother suggest you 'get that taken care of' with respect to your virginity may be the biggest burn ever.

8. Saying you needed to think 'creatively' to consumate your marriage...on film...will forever be proof that someone should have bought you The Joy of Sex for a wedding gift.

I could go on and on...seriously...the show is a goldmine...but part of me was a bit sad for all them after the whole thing. And sad for me that I watched it.

*Best line of the night - When I have sex the lights will be off and there will be music on. Music to drown out the weird sounds and the dark to cover up facial expressions. (I guess romance is not dead)

The Holiday Movie Wrap Up!

Before I had Will, every Christmas Eve I would hit the movie theatre. I'd think about it in advance and save the movie I really wanted to see the most - and go and gorge myself on popcorn and forget that I probably should have been with my family. For a few years running my friend Mitchell and I would hit the theatres on Boxing Day for a movie bonanza...one year we did three in a day. It's the one time of year where the pickings are NOT slim. This year - no exception. So many movies and so little time. Here are the top five that I will not miss over the next little while. Which ones are you pumped to see this season?

1. We Need To Talk About Kevin

I read the book this summer and it still haunts me. I think about it often. The casting of Tilda Swinton in this could not be better. It will disturb you - especially if you're a parent. But it's hands down the one I'm dying to see.

2. The Descendents

Please! It's my George!! But actually - more importantly? It's an Alexander Payne movie. Remember Sideways? One of my all time favourites and this is his movie. I can't wait.

3. The Artist

A silent movie you say? Not for you? Watch that trailer. The emotion - the expression - all with their faces. This movie looks INCREDIBLE. Look at his face at the 2:00 mark....amazeballs. But I am afraid of the theatre rage I could experience in this one...a silent movie with all those noisy popcorn eaters and whisperers?? LOOK OUT!

4. Shame

He's a sex addict. I'm hoping this movie will give me insight on how Halle Berry could have been cheated on. Well - really - why do I want to see it? Because I think Carey Mulligan can do no wrong (please see An Education if you haven't) and I need to know the hype around this Michael Fassbender dude.

5. War Horse

I'm a sucker for animal movies. And war movies. Combining the two could put me over the edge. Seriously, I hadn't really ever thought about the role horses played in the wars until people started talking about this movie. Unbelievable.

So what are you planning on seeing? Oh and The Muppets? It's a given...maybe Sunday!
