this week...

what you should listen to

Coldplay's Viva la Vida. i will admit, i'm not a big Coldplay song. there was always something a little, erm, soft about Chris Martin's music. also, a little copycat-y. with the exception of Fix You, which i love, and i don't care what you say, i don't really like Coldplay. but this? i LIKE! i'm impressed, Chris Martin. i'm impressed!

what you should watch

How I Met Your Mother, season 2. Okay, i'll admit it...i HATE Robin and Ted together. hate. they are nauseating as a couple  and adorable as friends. but, i'm three episodes in, and LOVING it. more than season 1.

What you should watch:

Restaurant Makeover. seriously? i cannot get enough of this show

Restaurant_Makeover.jpg

Now, i know the show is Toronto-based, so there's an extra thrill in seeing a restaurant that i know and have been to. but it's GREAT, and i think non-Toronto folk would enjoy this show as well.

because..um, there's Glen Peloso. my favorite designer on the show. LOVE.

glen.jpg

and his banter with Igor is THE BEST.

this week...and a contest!

what you should see:

my god. i want to have Daniel Day Lewis' babies. He's incredible. totally 100% deserving of his Oscar. Like other PT Anderson movies (Magnolia, Boogie Nights) this one makes you THINK. You don't know whether to hate or pity the character of Daniel Plainview. He's an oil man. a family man. and a mess. i laughed. i cried. i yelled at my TV. and i learned a hell of a lot about the oil business in the early 20th century. this is one you DON'T want to miss. seriously.

what you should listen to:

Photobucket

so. good. they are considered indie-pop. i consider them all kinds of awesome. Their self-titled debut album was released in January to, so far, critical success. They received much buzz from local blogs throughout 2007 during their rise to a record deal. Rolling Stone placed Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa at number 57 for the top 100 songs of 2007.

what you should WIN:

Photobucket

our good friends at Alliance Films have once again generously donated 2 copies of this movie (based on one of my all-time favorite books) for us to give away. (sadly, i haven't watched it yet. check back over the weekend for my review)

the first two people to correctly answer the following two questions will get the dvds:

What actor played the school principal in E.T., only to have his scene cut when Spielberg decided that his presence would be too distracting?

What 1987 movie features the "Partridge Family" house being firebombed?

this week...

This is the third studio album for these guys. and i heart them so. The second single off this album, "Ready for the Floor" is listened to over and over and over again on my ipod. it just doesn't get old for me. and it makes me feel good.

JOHNNY FAIRPLAY:

and

OZZY:

and

JAMES:

what you should listen to:

Photobucket

pick up a copy of The Bedlam in Goliath by The Mars Volta. This is the fourth album by the progressive rock band...but this is the first i've heard. and i'm loving it. They had me from the first single off the new album, Wax Simulacra. take my word for it...it's a good one.

what you should buy:

Tova and i bought this game this week. we are so excited to play it on our trip. Basically the way it works is that you have to try to guess the other peoples' answers to questions like: "Who would you prefer to rub oil on? A) a sumo wrestler or B) an elderly man." or "What would you prefer to snort up your nose? A. slug slime or B. sauerkraut" i cannot wait to play this one!!!

where you should go:

please, please, please go to your friendly neighborhood Cinnabon and eat one for me. They are pretty much all i'm thinking about these days. i'm dreaming about them. mmm.. i even decided that i can't make these lovely little numbers that Casey over at Linoleum Dynamite so sweetly shared with us. i can't make them because i will. eat. them. all.

this week...

what you should see:

i can't believe i'd never seen this show until a few weeks ago. I guess there are some positive things to come out of that nasty little writers' strike. I have time to watch some shows i never did before. Both Becca and Tova loved it, so i knew i was probably going to like it too. and i did. and so will you. so, check it out...Monday nights on NBC.

what you should listen to:

The Stage Names cover

this is a great, great album. "John Allyn Smith Sails" is my favorite track on the album...listen for the Sloop John B cover at the end. ah, love. and any artist who names a song after the 1982 movie Savannah Smiles (a huge part of my childhood) definitely gets more than a chance!

what you should buy:

i love gadgets. of all kinds. i especially love kitchen gadgets...you know, those ones that you see on tv and just have. to. have. and you bring them home and use them exactly once. well, i now have convinced myself that i need a panini maker. because everyone likes sandwiches...and paninis are sandwiches, with an edge. love!

where you should go:

The Cupcake Shoppe in Toronto. Now, i'm usually a cookie girl, but i do have love for a good cupcake. there's something that makes regular cake better when you make it an individual treat. and these certainly ARE a treat. each one is a work of art...you'd almost feel bad eating one. almost.

This week...

What you should see:

Photobucket
they are showing the first season of The OC on Much Music in Canada. at 7. every night. so, my lovely little DVR has been recording it for me. and since i've been suffering from slight insomnia the last couple of days, i've been watching the lovely little OC. and i can't stop. the first season was soo not like how i remembered it. Summer was so skankslut. Seth was almost unbearably white-and-nerdy. Julie's hair was seven different shades of bottled red (and Kirsten's was equally as bad). and the clothing? it seems so dated. except for Ryan's gray hoodie, of course, because, rawr.

What you should listen to:

danecook
Some people don't think he's funny at all...but i am a HUGE Dane Cook fan. of his comedy, not of his movies. let's get that one straight. his show at Madison Square Garden is hilarious. One of my personal favorites is when he starts talking about how he is convinced that he was in the civil war.

What you should buy:

Photobucket
wall letters from Dimples and Dandelions. I got a set for Isabella's room. They are stunning. We got the Shabby Daisy and Dots pattern. It's beautiful. It takes up an entire wall in her room because her name is 8 letters long and my stepmom bought us the 10 inch letters. but they are stunning. stunning. i highly recommend.

Where you should go:

you need to have a date night at Target...and while you are there, please pick up a pair of these for me my toddler...because i could probably die from the cuteness.

Photobucket
oh, you were looking for a real recommendation, eh?

well, if you live in Canada, or even if you don't, you might be getting what some call the 'winter blahs'...i know that i sure am. especially considering it was so cold this morning that the inside of my nose froze (i'm so not even kidding...it's like -20 out there, which to all you people who think in fahrenheit like i do, that's -4)

but, perhaps instead of getting blah'ed out by all the cold weather, why not embrace it and go skiing??

Personally, I'm a big fan of Mont Tremblant in Quebec.  It's beautiful, there's skiing for everyone (from crappy skiers like me to good skiers like the husband) and it's affordable. you can rent chalets of all sizes that are super duper close to the slopes

this week...

What you should see:

i know this show isn't new to many of you, and i know my friend Haley-O is a HUGE fan, but the husband and i recently started watching season 1 of Rome and we are hooked. Admittedly, we had to watch the first episode 3 times because, well, erm, it was confusing. There were so many people with bizarro names, like Servillia, and too many of them looked EXACTLY the same. but overall, it's highly entertaining, and highly addictive.

What you should listen to:

Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

I just picked up downloaded their sophomore album because i loved their debut album, Everything All the Time, so very much. and this album doesn't disappoint. and i just knew it was going to love it...any band that puts a song called Detlef Schrempf on their album is aces by me ;)

What you should buy:

buy for me, at least. i'm ALWAYS taking pictures of myself. and other people. and there's always an extra arm in there and sometimes the angle is always wrong...but with the XShot, you can take pictures of yourself without them looking stupid in them...you'll only look stupid WHILE taking them. It misght just be worth it...

Where you should go:

duh. this one's a no-brainer this week.

The Walden Galleria Mall in Buffalo. I mean, certainly it's NOT the best mall i've ever been to..but i spent the majority of my day there yesterday and had a grand ole' time. I mean, it has a Cheesecake FActory, so you know it's going to make me happy...but it's also got an Urban Outfitters (love) and Lucky Brand Jeans (love) and an Apple Store (love love love) It's not too far from the border for all you Toronto readers...and it's totally worth the day trip. (and if anyone wants to go - EVER - i'm totally up for the road trip!)

also...one of their huge anchor sporting-goods stores is called

and the husband and i got a good kick out of that.

because we are 12.

This Week...

What you should see:

I'm recommending Juno this week. In the future, i will be pimping movies that i've actually, well, you know, erm seen, but since it's been a busy week at Casa de Martell, sadly no new movies were watched. But this one, it's a good one, i can already tell. Even my good friend Mr. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 92% on the fresh-o-meter. I mean, the cast alone should make you want to see it...Superbad's Michael Cera and The Office's Rainn Wilson...PERFECTION. It's Jason Reitman's (yes, THE son of THE Ivan Reitman, of Ghostbuters fame) second film, and I've heard ONLY good things.

ps..anyone want to see it with me??!!

What you should listen to:

Because of the Times by Kings of Leon

these three brothers and a cousin are a blend of southern rock (but the good kind...not the scary, creepy kind) and a blues-y/indie rock. My favorite track is 'Fans', but 'McFearless' and 'On Call' are pretty great songs too.

What you should buy:

These are porcelain shopping bag vases. They also come in paper bag form

these are a PERFECT Christmas gift. they are different. and fun. and reasonably priced. and you can buy them here.

Where you should go:

If you are in the Greater Toronto Area, I highly recommend the Lula Lounge. It's located in Little Brazil, and you can enjoy the Latin American music while you eat...and if you go on Saturday night, you can even learn to salsa dance.
