When I started writing for The Kitchen Party, I was pretty confident in the kitchen and fairly sure that I didn't have that much more to learn. It's been startling to realize how much I didn't know - pressure cookers are all kinds of amazing, I cannot make a good pie crust, people will send you weird hate mail whenever you write about allergy stuff, and a good espresso maker
will make my husband practically sob with happiness. It's been a lot of fun.
I think that what we end up eating as a family says a lot about who we are as a family - from our Valentine's Day dinner at McDonald's (we asked the kids where they wanted to go and voila.), to the fondue we had last night for supper and the mashed sweet potatoes that The Baby is eating right this very moment. You could get a very accurate recipe for who our family is from that: haphazard, child-centered, fun-loving, and REALLY fond of sweet potatoes. And I am - in writing those words - happy with who we are, even if it does mean having to eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning for the rest of my life, apparently.
I'm grateful to urbanmoms.ca and to Cuisinart for giving me this opportunity, and I'm grateful to all of you for reading and commenting over the past two years. I've really enjoyed it.

We'll miss you, Beck!
Beck, I have always loved your posts, for both the cooking & the writing. I will miss both, but best of luck to you in all of your future endeavours.
I will really miss your writing here, Beck... it was one reason to LIKE Mondays!
Hate mail? People sent you hate mail about the allergy posts? Who? The Gluten Anti Defamation League? People for the Ethical Treatment of Wheat?
There are worse things to have for breakfast than oatmeal. And I'm not going to finish that thought because it will lead me somewhere gross.
(PS -- why are your Kitchen Party posts now being attributed to someone named Jen?)
Hi SSBeacon. Beck's posts are still Beck but, as the person often behind the scenes of urbanmoms.ca, Beck's final post was added by me in our new swanky digs.
Take a look around urbanmoms.ca and you'll meet a bunch of writers and bloggers worth getting to know.
Jen (not Beck)
Has it really been two years? That seems impossible!
I've really enjoyed your 'haphazard' family's take on food. That says a lot about your writing since my hubby is the the head chef in this house and we don't have kids! I'll be watching to see where you turn up next - good luck!
Aww! You'll be missed Beck!
So very, very sad. I love your Kitchen Party posts and I'm very sad to see them go.
I've enjoyed your Kitchen Party posts--you always were able to tie together thoughts about food and family. I agree that what you eat as a family says a lot about your family.
I have enjoyed your posts Beck and your way with words. Good luck in your next endeavor!! Cheers to your lovely family and to years of happy eating together!!!
You LAST post. I can't believe it has been two years. I have been reading your writing for two years. Thanks.
I'll miss reading you here, too. And I, for one, LOVE it when you write about food allergies. ;)
It was the only reason I hopped over here ... Thanks for the great recipes and posts Beck!
It was a good read every time. Thanks.
WHA? Did I miss something? No! Why are you stopping? I love your Kitchen Party posts, and the way you took food and made it a metaphor always for so much more.
:(
Ha! My kids are overly fond of oatmeal too, for some strange reason. And McDonald's too for that matter. Although we don't eat nearly as much McD's as we do oatmeal. Thankfully. ;)
I've enjoyed your KP posts. Sad to see them come to an end. :(
TWO YEARS!?!? REALLY!?!?! I remember when you started this. I must be really old.
I've loved it as you know. Always entertaining, often very poignant, frequently VERY funny, sometimes sad, I enjoyed every one.
I am sorry to see it end.
Surely your last because you need to devote more time to your recipe blog.
No?
I've enjoyed Kitchen Party, but just don't go giving up on Frog & Toad now, K?
Your posts were always so wonderful mixing cooking with family. I'll miss them.
I'll definitely miss you, but I know that love in the kitchen will live on in your home. You're giving your children a great gift.
I'll miss you here Beck. I think you'll be tough to replace.
Happy days and good eats, Beck.
And you forgot to mention the RICE COOKER. Only YOU could make me want one. :)
Jen
Despite all appearances, oatmeal is my middle name.
Bummer.
oh Beck! I'm sad to read that this is your last post for Kitchen Party! I love your writing and am always amazed at how beautifully you describe your food, family and experiences. Thanks for sharing and entertaining, and I look forward to keeping in touch with you and your writing.
Cook on, brave and noble Beck.
And so the rest of it begins.
whoowho!
has it really been 2 yrs that you've been writing kitchen party posts? it doesn't seem possible that so much time has passed already!! I'm just glad you still have your other blog :)
