The humble O-shaped pastry is a staple in my pantry and bagels may grace my family's plates for any of the three main daily meals (and, let's face it, bagels make great snack foods, too). In my house, we can't seem to get enough of these yummy bread circles, whether toasted, spread, sandwiched or even made-over into pizzas. So when I heard about National Bagel Day...well, I just had to get involved!
Did you know that according to Dempster's® Bagel Barometer, six out of 10 Canadians eat bagels on a regular basis with nearly a quarter eating these circular delicacies daily or several times a week? That's a significant amount of bagel-eating action going on nation-wide. And interestingly, all this bagel-noshery is not confined to breakfast-fare. According to their survey, there are four main types of bagel-lovers, with only the "energizer" type restricting their bagel fix to breakfast. In fact, nearly six out of 10 Canadian bagel fans fall into what they call "The Craver" category. To celebrate National Bagel Day 2012 Dempster's has launched a new bagel recipe and partnered with well-known Food Network chef and bagel fan Bob Blumer to: uncover Canada's most passionate bagel-lovers and find out what an ultimate Canadian bagel's defining qualities are. You may be surprised by the answers.

Dempster's Bagels Recipes
Developed by Bob Blumer
Cheddar n' apple
Everything you love about apple pie--without the guilt!Ingredients:
- 1 Dempster's cinnamon raisin bagel
- 1 Macintosh or Fuji apple--or whatever apple is available
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 ounce aged sharp cheddar cheese, sliced (ideally room temperature)
- 1 tablespoon toasted pecan pieces (optional)
Directions:
- Slice apple into 3/4 cm-thick slices and remove core.
- In a small bowl add apple slices and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Toss to coat evenly.
- In a frying pan over medium-high heat, add butter. When butter sizzles, add apples and cook for 2 minutes per side, or until they begin to soften and brown. Reserve.
- To serve, toast, and if you choose, lightly butter bagel. Top with cheese and apple slices, and sprinkle with pecan pieces.
Banh Mi Bagel
A mash-up of Thai flavors and the traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich.Ingredients:
- 1 Dempster's sesame bagel
- ¼ of a fresh coconut, or 1/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup crunchy or smooth peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons freshly grated ginger
- ¼ - ¾ teaspoon red chili flakes
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1/3 cup shredded purple, green or Napa cabbage
- 1 medium carrot, peeled and shredded
- 2 tablespoons fresh mint or cilantro leaves, finely chopped (optional)
Directions:
- If using fresh coconut, remove coconut from shell and use a veggie peeler to peel off the tough brown outer skin. Use the medium side of a grater to shred 1/3 cup.
- Add coconut to a medium bowl along with peanut butter, ginger, chili flakes and lime juice. Blend with a fork. Reserve.
- In a small bowl, toss cabbage, carrot and mint.
- To serve, toast, and if you choose, lightly butter bagel. Top with a generous spread of peanut butter mixture, and veggies.
- Remaining peanut butter spread will last in the fridge for 5 days in a tightly sealed container.

I love having an everything bagel with Grape Jelly. It sounds weird, but tastes very yummy. The Grape flavor brings out the onion flavor in the bagel. Just be careful that you don't put too much on as it will drip and get all over you. (I need a bib) LOL

It has been a few years but there was a bagel/sandwich shoppe where I used to live that made all their bagels in a fire clay oven. I would get their onion and poppyseed bagel, add on it the most amazing chicken salad (haven't been able to replicate at home), top it off with some pickles, plain cukes and sprouts. It was great.

My favourite combination is crunchy peanut butter and slices of Granny Smith apple on a toasted whole wheat or multigrain bagel. I lightly toast my bagel then top it with some freshly smashed avocado. This tastes rich and creamy, but is guilt-free because the avocado is a "healthy" kind of fat. Sometimes, I'll then sprinkle it with a little red pepper or garlic salt.
