If so, what did you do to support your kids' English language skills?

Anna's book started to grab at my heartstrings (you know, that maddening love when you realise you're truly falling for the characters) almost two thirds in.

Waiting for the Monsoon tells the story of Charlotte Bridgewater, the Indian-born daughter of a British general. The Bridgewaters stay on after India's independence, in a dilapidated mansion that is merely a phantom of its former glory. Through various time-shifting vignettes, we learn of Charlotte's childhood during the height of the British Raj, her father's nightmarish war experience in Burma, her failed marriage to handsome, tormented doctor, and finally, her growing love and devotion for an impoverished tailor, Madan, who finds his way into her previously forlorn life.

Sleepy, dusty and hot, I felt feel Charlotte's frustrations with her life. As the story deepens and intensifies, I got caught up in the characters' inner lives and their relationships with each other and their bleak setting. The way Anna weaves Charlotte's life with that of Madan's shows true brilliance.

We try and finish our nightly duties quickly so we can climb into my son's bed and devour the tales of wizards, goblins, ghosts and magical mishaps. Not only is it lovely to have this cozy time with my kids, but it's so much fun to discover something new and wonderful together. So much of our time is spent running to activities, and doing homework that it can be easy to forget the joy of each other's company.

Our bedtime ritual changed: the kids read individually in their beds, and I took that time to clean up, go on the computer and do other things. It was nice to have that extra time to myself but I missed that together-time at the end of a long day to unwind and lose ourselves together in a great story.

Recently, my friend told me about how he had just read the whole Harry Potter series with his kids, ages 6 and 8. What a brilliant idea! I hadn't read the famous series - and it sounded like something we could all enjoy together.

I bought the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling, and what a magical ride it has been. We've read a chapter every night for the past ten nights, and we can't get enough.

Without my usual screaming, teeth are brushed, pyjamas worn and homework is done in a jiffy. These days, it's all about the Potter.

I try not to let on how much I love this ritual - it's pretty awesome. I'm already planning what to read together after we finish this series - I'm thinking some classics like Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

I've seen her two times. I look for her now but there's only a web between Table's legs and her flat. Table balances good, that's pretty tricky, when I go on one leg I can do it forages but then I always fall over. I don't tell Ma about Spider. She brushes webs away, she says they're dirty but they look like extra-thin silver to me. Ma likes the animals that run around eating each other on the wildlife planet, but not real ones. When I was four I was watching ants walking up Stove and she ran and splatted them all so they wouldn't eat our food. One minute they were alive and the next minute they were dirt. I cried so my eyes nearly melted off. "

He loves his mother desperately, and within the confines of their little home, they play games, do "gym", read and play. Despite their limitations, he is undoubtedly happy and loved. The mother-child bond shines in this novel. This story underscores that love is indeed blind to its surroundings and circumstances.

The only field trips I remember are to a salmon fishery, a museum and snowshoeing. Not that those trips aren't awesome in their own way - they totally are - but a French film festival is more my kind of thing!

To get downtown, we took the subway with 63 kids and loads of teachers and parent volunteers. One of the many things that I love about my kids' school is that so many of the parents give so much of their time and energy to making the school a great place for their kids. I was in awe of my Girl's teacher as he calmly supervised his group on the subway. I, of course, was completely terrified of losing one of the four in my group. I made all of them hold my hand or jacket throughout the whole journey which I'm sure completely mortified my Girl.

On the subway, I loved listening to the conversations that were going on in my group. Much to my surprise, the big topic of conversation was Whitney Houston's death and the reasons behind it. These 7-year old kids were contemplating what mix of medications had caused her demise???? Other topics included how their parents work too much, what they had for lunch, and whether or not they would have to actually do any schoolwork that day. One of the girls in my group came dressed in a pink fedora with a stuffed toy poodle in her purse. In my opinion, perfect attire for a French film festival.

The movie we watched, Les Contes de La Nuit by Michael Ocelot, was actually a montage of 6 short films based on fairy tales from different nations. All the films were done in silhouettes against multi-coloured backdrops - so visually stunning. I loved being in the cinema with all those kids, bright-eyed and excited. There was so much positive, lovely energy in that room.

What I most enjoyed about the experience was seeing my Girl interact with her friends in her own element. She was very different from how she is at home; here, she's always struggling to define her place between her older and younger siblings. At school, she's just the Girl, doing her own thing, so much calmer and real. I felt very privileged to be there.
