Change is in the Air: Back to School with Reactine

Get ready for fall, and all the change that comes with back to school, the falling leaves, and the refreshing chill in the air! The "Change is in the Air" Blog Series is hosted by Reactine. Share your experiences about the coming fall season in the comments below for your chance to win some great gift certificates - perfect for back to school shopping - and learn how to manage your fall seasonal allergies thanks to our friends at Reactine.

Hard to believe, but school is actually starting again in a few weeks! Summer is nearly over and that means two things: first of all, it's time to head out on a back-to-school shopping mission; and second, I need to get on top of my allergies before the leaves start to fly.

Now that my kids are getting a little bit older, I have learned (through hard experience) that I can't go shopping for clothes without them, unless I want to just head right back to the store to exchange everything. I find this especially true now that my oldest is approaching ten: she has very definite ideas about styles, colours and even brands. Gone are the days of scouring the sale racks at the Children's Place for the best buys in coordinating separates. Now the back-to-school shopping excursions consist of following my daughter around the mall as she loads up on trendy garb at Aéropostale, West 49, H&M and Old Navy (thank goodness for $10 denim week!)

And the mall - my god, I hate the mall. It's amazing, because I used to love going to the mall; I would spend hours browsing the stores, walking the corridors and snacking in the food court. Now? It's an in-and-out mission in as short a time as possible for me. Maybe it's the hordes of people, maybe it's the insane parking scene or maybe it's the smell. Whatever it is, I think I'm actually allergic to going to the mall.

Thing is, I am allergic and as if the change in seasons weren't enough to get my allergies going (what with the ragweed and leaves and grass), then I have to go to the mall: one of the last hold-outs of the overwhelming cloud of perfume in our increasingly fragrance-aware world. All I need to do is walk past the Body Shop, the Aveda store or Bath and Body Works, and I will have a full-on allergic reaction. And I don't even dare to venture near the big department stores (I'm talkin' about you, The Bay) because they totally always place the cosmetic and perfume counters right at the mall entrance, and they still insist on having those ladies who ambush you to spray you with perfume!

bigstock_Woman_Sneezing_1996287.jpg

But malls and perfume aside, I'll be stocking up on Reactine on our shopping trip as well, because fall is absolutely my favourite season to be outdoors, and I don't want seasonal allergies ruining my good time. Out here in Calgary the city stopped spraying herbicide in public areas some years ago (a great thing for the environment) which means that major allergy season is just about to kick in for me. It just so happens our house borders a lovely large park - fantastic for walks and play (and the school is just on the other side of it) but not so great for me when the wind is blowing in the right direction and the ragweed, grass seeds and dust go flying in the wind. All in all, I'm looking forward to this autumn - I get to go back to work and enjoy the fall colours - hopefully sneeze-free!

BACK TO SCHOOL, BACK TO ALLERGY SEASON

It's that time of year again - and with back-to-school comes the hustle and bustle of daily routines, packing lunches, after-school activities and busy schedules. Now that things are picking up again after the summer break, you don't want to get bogged down by those pesky allergy symptoms. More than nine million Canadians suffer from seasonal allergies, including those caused by ragweed in the fall months. With your daily routine bulking up for the fall season, keep in mind that effective options for managing allergy symptoms do exist - thankfully! - so there's no need to sacrifice your child's soccer game or an after-school trip to the park.

What causes seasonal allergies and who is most likely to experience them? Here are some interesting facts about the allergic reactions we love to hate:

  • Exposure to allergens when the body's defenses are weakened (such as after a viral infection like a cold or the flu, during puberty, or during pregnancy) may contribute to the development of allergies.
  • People with year-round allergies are more likely to have developed them as adults.
  • Women are more likely than men to have year-round allergies.
  • Ever wonder what causes that allergic reaction? When you come into contact with an allergen, your body produces a substance called histamine, which causes allergy symptoms. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine; antihistamines like Reactine can provide allergy symptom relief for a full 24 hours.
  • If you have allergies, your child has a 30 - 50 per cent chance of also developing allergies. This increases to 60 - 80 per cent if both parents have allergies.
  • Allergy symptoms can actually lessen as you get older.

Interesting read.. I had very bad allergies as a young girl but they have subsided a bit .. now my daughter is suffering . This time of year is awful for her .....

Fall is my favourite time of year, but I do suffer terribly from allergies.

So far my allergies have not been a problem this summer. I do always have a package of Reactine on hand in case of problems. Its true my allergies have developed as an adult.

I enjoyed reading this post because it gave me lots of information on allergies and the triggers to avoid. When I can't avoid the triggers I know Reactine will make my life a whole lot easier.

Oh how I know allergies well! In May, I'm inundated. By July, they subside until August when I am bombarded with itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing that exhausts me. This goes on until the first frost...yeah...I'm the only one in my family who anxiously awaits for the cold snap by this time! Luckily, over the counter meds help as do the lotion built in tissues...they are my lifesavers~

We always make sure we bring our reactine with us when we our out in the summer and fall

3 membersnof my family our allergic to cats and 2 of our families have cats. Therefore, we always make sure we bring our reactine when we get together for any family event.

My husband has Rhinitis and my daughter has this also. So now that allergy season is here we make sure the prescription medication is filled.

I've been lucky an d never had any allergies, but both my son and hubby suffer from them -- horribly after a rain storm too

I out grew my alergies by middle age!

Interesting article. I never had allergies when I was younger but I seem to have developed some in my more mature years. I think it has a lot to do with all the pollutants in the atmosphere.

Allergies are a neverending battle at Chateau Beck! Our youngest is allergic to cats and has seasonal allergies. We relocated Romy the cat to my parents house and use the Chloraseptic nasal gel/Reactine when we go visit which seems to make a huge difference. Outdoor allergens seem way harder to control. Some days are worse than others and if we medicate before exposure it's manageable but sometimes I have the guilt that we're medicating way too much.

Wow! It's been awhile since I've commented my urbanmom profile picture is SO OLD..I have got to get back into blogging and update that pic pronto!

Allergy season? I suffer from allergies year round

My family suffers from year round allergies to everything including our precious family cat !

My husband has suffered from allergies during this time for years. This season both my children have developed allergies.

Nettie pots help with the allergies!

I was a non believer until I got a 3 pack sample from Reactine and now I am a 1 woman believer spreading the word about the benefits of Reactine; only take it once a day wow and it works; and non drowsy and you mean it can still function and make sense so now all my family and friends are ready to try the benefits of Reactine when their allergies hit; which have started here in Winnipeg.

I had horrible allergies as a child but I think it was diet related as now I'm eating cleanly and I'm fine.

As I'm getting older things are getting worse for me....ugh! Pass the tissue!

As I'm getting older my allergies are getting worse! UGH! Pass the tissues!

For me there's no such thing as an allergy season as I suffer from allergies year round. Everything from dust to various pollens, weeds certain foods and especially perfume.
But between Reactine & prescription nasal sprays it is becoming more manageable.

Thanks for helping the world breathe a little easier.

I work long hours and deal with customers constantly all day, therefore, I require allergy relief that works for long periods of time. I am allergic to dust, mold, dust mites and leaves on the ground.

this year has been really bad for allergies, and with all the fires in the province the breathing isnt any better, all of my kids and myself suffer from allergies of many different kinds, pollens , dust mites , mold spores yuck, having the air conditioner really helps , we use allergy medicind daily and nasal spray and eye drops , no fun at all

My allergies haven't been that much of an issue this season. Hopefully it stays that way (fingers crossed).

It's amazing how many people don't realise the reason they aren't feeling well is because of allergies. Some great pointers in this article

I ahve very bad allergies and find using meds on a regular basis a good way to overcome getting a serious infection.

Luckily I have no allergies. My husband has recently developed a cat allergy and Reactine is his remedy of choice. Only time will tell if DS (7yrs old) develops any...

i am a Reactin survivor at this time of year

I remember suffering through allergy attacks as a young child but seemed to grow out ot it. However, I have children that are suffering and it is nice to know that there is help out there.

I needed Reactine's help this summer.

thanks for sharing.

Good article! I live in Calgary also, and find it difficult when the weeds are blooming. As I age, my allergies are getting worse instead of better.

I totally understand how times change when your kids get older, and them not letting you choose anything for them.

Thankfully my allergies have not been too bad this year.

My son having allergy each year end of August to October. Reactin did help after couple days.

Pick me, your next winner! Starving artist here desperately needs $50 gap card to dress myself. Summer time is here and cats are everywhere. My family' s allergy act up most.

I remember my sister suffering through terrible allergies when we were younger. I was so grateful that I didn't have those issues, but I find that I am getting affected by allergies as I get older. Boo.

I don't really get allergies but sometimes when it's super windy or even in the sun my eyes will really water.

My husband developed terrible allergies a few years ago and they seem to be getting worse every year. I feel so bad for him in the summer because he feels so miserable when outdoors. Reaction does seem to ease his symptoms somewhat but unfortunately not enough to be able to cut the grass!

I can only imagine how it must feel

The older i get the worse my allergies are. As a kid i loved to play outside. Now, the dust in the summer...i'll stay in my basement where it's cool and sneezing or scratching!!

I had my first EVER allergic reaction at the age of 33. I had to go to the hospital it was so bad. Still have no idea what caused it, nor does the Specialist I saw afterwards. I make a point of carrying Reactine just in case ;)

Interesting facts above - thanks. For me it is mostly dust, but it is pretty much everything for my boyfriend!

I am very lucky not to have allergies, I see people with allergies and feel really bad for them.

All of your stories inspire me ! Thank you ! I have allergies and it's hard to pass it throught !

I just have allergies all year. I always have a runny nose and watery eyes. I can also sneeze 5 or 6 times in a row quite often.

My worst fear was that my babies would be allergic to my beloved cat when I brought them home but luckily that didn't happen! I was so relieved! We are relatively allergy-free except in the fall when my ds starts sneezing and sneezing...

This has been the worst summer ever for allergies in our household

i keep thinking i've developed allergies in the last few years, so this post makes me think i surely have!

Spring and early summer seems to be the worst time for me. My son and daughter have year long allergies, but we still enjoy the outdoors as much as we can.

Thank you for the interesting facts. Fortunately I don't suffer from any allergies.

This season my son began suffering from post-nasel drip which caused him to cough alot. Our doctor recommended Reactine once a day and I cannot believe the difference. No more cough.... Thanks Reactine!

I have allergies all year long! Allergic to cats (I have 2), dust, grass. It's tough to be me!

I've found this year to be much worse than last. I try to keep the family away from areas with lots of allergy triggers and we also have a home air purifier to keep the atomosphere free of allergens as much as possible

Spring and summer are the worst for me with the pollen in the air.. Makes my eyes itch and makes me sneeze like crazy!!

I knew my son has issues with allergies so I took him to get tested. While there the doctor told me that I should set up an appointment for myself because it would appear that my anxiety actually is allergies causing my asthma to act up in a different manner (no wheezing). Wow - I thought that as we got older you only had to worry about aches pains and mental acuity. Guess allergies are there too!@

no allergies! yay!

My husband has SEVERE asthma which I am beginning to believe is now allergen reactions to the air around us...my heart wretches every time he has an attack...and several times I've headed to the phone to call 9/11...this year has been the worst year yet...and the article has made me think in a new direction...THANK YOU~!!

I am stating to develop allergies and this is a great package to win as it would come in handy

I'm allergic to grass and pollen. I sneeze a lot and my eyes get puffy. I get all stuffy.

I don't have any allergies myself but my mom does and she used to complain about it all the time.

The funny thing is: I think I'm literally allergic to malls as well! As soon as I enter one now (though I didn't have this problem during my late teens and the 'mall' was WEM), my eyes get red and itchy, and they well up with tears so badly I can't even see the SALE signs... Woe is me, the only malls I can go to are outlet malls...I wonder if I should try Reactine for regular malls as well as for pollen?

I suffer extreme allergies on the fall/spring seasons, but Reactine is my Super Hero who's fights away all my allergies.

don't have any allergies, luckily.

I've found that the older I've gotten, the worse my allergies are getting. I appreciate this article.

Thank you so much for the great article, I never look forward to allergy season!

Fall is for sure the worst of the seasons here!

I suffer from mold and grass allergies, seems to be year round

My son suffers from allergies and seems that the spring and summer are the worst seasons for it so we always have reactine in the medicine cabinet.

I never had allergies as a child, only developed them when I was pregnant with my daughter and they have progressively gotten worse - this past spring was particularly bad! I'm not looking forward to the Fall, even if it's my favourite season! :)

My son and I both have horrible seasonal allergies. We've never been able to find out what causes it, but for the most part we deal with our snuffly noses and sneezing without too much issue. I've had a lifetime to learn to deal with it; what really breaks my heart is that my poor boy has inherited the problem as well. Obviously there's a genetic factor involved...

my son has awful allergies...and he works out side which doesnt help

both my oldest and I have allergies - my daughters is just to dust though, very managable and helps me to keep motivated to clean the house LOL. My bad one is mold and I live in a very wet area of Canada - not so good for me, from October - early summer I suffer from it because there is mold everywhere - outside the leaves are rotting, inside on the windows if I am not carefull. I have tried difrent medications but they all make me feel awful :( I suffer threw LOL.

My daughter and I suffer from year-round allergies; Dust, mold, grass, ragweed, trees, cat dander. With 4 kids in the house... I do my best with the cleaning. We have ripped up carpets and installed central air conditioning with a HEPA filter. We still have to take daily meds., if we ever plan on stepping out the door and we are both big on outdoor activities. Life goes on... Pass the tissues, plz.

We are fortunate enough not to have airborne allergies, but we do have to deal with severe food allergies in our house. Allergies suck, no matter what.

Interesting read! Thanks!

Spring was bad on the coast in BC but the summer was pleasant . The Spring rain seemed to mix up the pollen.

I don't have any allergies so i am thankful for that.

I am allergic to dust which is hard to avoid year round. I have great sympathy for other allergy sufferers.

who knew, something that gets better with middle age - ha ha!!

I am allergic to grass and dust and as a child I could avoid mowing the lawn. I am hoping my children don't develop the grass allergy as it was great when I was young, but it's not the same when you have your own lawn to maintain.

I loved your post. I'm looking forward to my son going back to school.. but not to the change in the weather.. Fortunately my son no longer has the allergies he used to have when he was younger. Hope that the change in the season wont cause it to act up.

I also never had allergies as a young person, but now that I am older I have developed allergies. Both my husband and myself, especially since we moved into town from the countryside 13 years ago have developed allergies year round. But thankfully they are not as serious as some have the misfortune to have.

Sometimes people are under the impression that I am suffering from a cold, rather than a seasonal allergy, so they are a little cautious around me. After all, the sniffles and sneezes do mimic the common cold symptoms to the onlooker.

our allergies are low as we try to keep flowering plants that cause probelms at a minimum

almost everyone in my family has allergies so we definitely keep the reactine handy!!

Both my husband and I have year round allergies and find that the Reactine non drowsy formula is perfect for our allergies. We are allergic to flowers, plants, trees, pollen, dust, mold, certain foods and some perfumes and find the Reactine really helps to alleviate the allergy symptoms.

Sneezes, sneezes, sneezes, stuffy nose, mouth breathing only and red itchy eyes- that is what our daughter has. She seems to be reacting to a lot more this year, so now we need to try and discover what is bothering her. Thanks.

sneezing, runny noses, sinus pain, oh the joys

Luckily, none of us in our family has allergies,,but very interesting article!

I think it is important for people who don't have allergies to understand that allergies negatively impact a person's life and sometimes lifestyle.

Both my children suffer from allegies (pets, grass, bug bits, molds etc.) so my pediatrican told me to give them each 1/2 reactine everyday for the summer! Best advice ever.

I'm the only one in the family who has allergies so I understand first hand how tough summer can be outdoors! This article was great and thank god for Reactine!

Thanks!

This has been the worst spring & summer for my teenage son's allergies. He is just starting to get a bit of relief now & can finally slow down on the allergy meds

our 18 year old has bad allegies, especially in the spring, not much he can do except take reactin, what other choice is there? live in misery for about a month..

Allergies are no fun...when I was younger they were really bad...now they're still around just not as bad...

I dring mangosteen juice along with my family and it keeps us allergy free.

It seems that every year our family gets more and more allergies. I never used to have any allergies as a kid and now I keep my Reactine in everybag, car, work and room in the house. I find that drinking cold water before I go outside works a little and I chomp on ice cubes regularly.

Reactine is a must in our household.

This season wasn't as bad as some can be. That being said , fall can be worst for me so I guess I will just have to wait and see.

As the weather starts to cool down in Halifax we now have to keep the windows closed to keep all the new types of pollen in the garden out of the house so my wife can breathe at night!!

As I get older I have less allergy problems but my husband and children continue to have problem (spring and fall the worst)

Be good to your body and it will be good to you. Try to eat as healthy as possible so whatever hits you you will have a good fighting chance.

my son has terrible allergies, especially during the fall season,im not sure why,hes always clear during spring when the pollen count is high

Lots of interesting info that I didn't know about allergies. THanks!

I also had terrible allergies - especially in August and September during ragweed season. Once I had my children they practically went away. Now my husband has allergies all year and my children have mild allergies, which I hope they will outgrow.

I don't suffer from seasonal allergies, but if someone sits next to me on the subway wearing a lot of perfume, my eyes will water and my nose will run. I try to avoid the clouds of perfume at the stores.

Some interesting points. I didn't know women are more likely than men to have year-round allergies. I do agree with the author ... too much overwhelming senses bombarding us. Are people losing their sensitive smell? Theaters are always too loud for me ... is this what getting old means :(

Thanks for the opportunity to win a gift card ... always helpful :)

The girls and I suffer terrible allergies during the spring and summer. Runny nose, itchy eyes and all round cranky, excellent!

My allergies have been nuts this year since we moved into our house out in the country. Benadryl has been my best friend!

I never had allergies as a child, but as I have aged suddenly a whole gamut of pollen and spore related horrors have popped up; misery is an understatement some days.

Thanks for the Wonderful contest~

Yes, that wonderful time of the year, allergy season! And wow, did it hit hard already, between smoke from forest fires blowing in from B.C to the neighbours stinky fire pits to the fall allergens, it has been non stop sneezing here. But the garden is bursting with all things ripe and yummy just begging to be picked. So armed with my box of Reactine, I start the day outside harvesting and reveling in the joy of the autumn.

I wonder why it is that women are more likely than men to have year-round allergies?

My left eye only is tearing up as I type--allergies suck!

I was going through Kleenex every morning before I remember there is an easier cure!

I cannot tocuh our kitty and then put my hands to my face. I must wash right away of suffer.

Change of season, prepare for the allergies!

My children suffer from allergies.

Thank goodness no one in my family suffers from any major allergies. Seasonal allergies are enough trouble.

8 years ago we moved to a new town, with noone in our family having allergies or an allergy history, in any of our family members. well i finally realized i had them after a couple of years of thinking i had a cold, then clued in that it was allergies. now my son who is 14 has developed them. i don't know if living off of lake superior has anything to do with it but other people here in town have also said they only acquired allergies since moving here.

I'm praying my girls don't inherit their father's hay fever...

When travelling during our recent vacation, I took my box of reactine with me. Different countries also had different types of allergy counts.

Both my boys have allergies, and I have admit without Reactine they would of been very misserable and so would of I, It is one of the few alergy medications that i feel safe using on my kids

Luckily my son is the only member of our family who suffers from seasonal allergies and Reactine really does help him.

Thankfully no real allergies here. That was funny about being allergic to the mall. I second that!

I don't have allergies but my wife does and Reactine has helped her deal with them.

Key work is that it was more like season(S) this year. We felt the impact already about 3 different times.

Luckily, I don't have allergies so the change of seasons doesn't affect me but there are a lot of people out there that do and I'm sure Reactine is a great help and provides much needed relief.

I had some seasonal allergies when I was younger but once I started having children, my body changed and I no longer suffer with any. My kids all seem to suffer at different times and are affected by different things. Husband is the worst with many allergies all year long.

Our allergies got so bad we had to tear out all the carpets and put down hardwood flooring. Then we had to put down our two family pets. A cat 2 years old and our Chocolate Lab 8 years old.

at one time the doctor thought I had a allergy to nuts after a bad reaction to haloween candy.,...odd it wasnt to nuts,,,and we still have no idea what caused the hives and swelling of the throat

I never had allergies and since I have gotten older I find that this is something that I have acquired the past 5 years. We took out all the carpets and put hardwood down and I find that this has helped. I take Reactine and this has made my days alot easier to breathe.

I am lucky not too have any allergies but my spouse does very badly and uses Reactine daily during allergy season.

I never realized that you can be allergic to the mall, but after reading the post I figured that it applied to me as well. After spending a small fortune on back-to-school supplies for my four children, my chest began to hurt, my eyes blurred and my head seemed to float in another dimension. Did I just spent my hydro bill supposed payment on backpacks and jeans? Anyway, I always liked those relaxing family dinners by candle light.
