Last year when my cousin Madeleine died at the age of 31 I thought a lot about life. I spent a lot of time trying to make sense of it all. Needless to say, I am still trying. However, I did find a little clarity and it came disguised as regular people. You might think I'm nuts but I found that once I was looking for answers they seemed to be everywhere. Watching someone you love pass away before their time is terrible but Madeleine's death was even more than that to me and to many people touched by... More »

I can't tell you how many times I have marked a page in a magazine intending to go back and read the full article when I have time. Or how often I have meant to go back to a store to buy that cute pair of shoes I saw in the window. Unfortunately, it rarely happens. Urbanmoms live busy lives and usually, we are not our number one priority...not even close. Once we have taken care of the needs of everyone else and focused on the essentials (work, food, sleep), we have little time left for the nice-to-haves. That is... More »
I sometimes find it difficult to articulate urbanmoms.ca's reason for being, especially to non-Urban Moms. We are a virtual community, a resource centre, a girls night out...get it? Probably not. Urbanmoms.ca was inspired by a group of six amazing women. My friendship with this group grew out of the craziness of becoming a mom but has evolved and developed over the years to form something I depend on. What I value about these relationships is that we are all very different. We range in age over more than 10 years, we work in different industries or at home, we are... More »
Welcome to urbanmoms.ca! The Urbanmoms team is so excited to be off the ground and gearing up to offer you the ultimate online resource for urban moms, by urban moms. We are obviously in the very early stages of development. Urbanmoms.ca was created to empower urban moms by giving us a voice and a resource within our communities. Information in the marketplace and community resources are often geared toward mothers without considering the woman behind the mom. This narrow view makes it difficult to relate and find information relevant to you. But, in order to grow, we need to hear... More »
Recently I was putting together a CD for an old friend of mine to give to her before she got married. It was filled with songs from our many adventures together - our time spent living in Boston, our road trips to The Carolinas, Vermont, NY. We were in our early twenties and living large. Listening to these songs took me back to a time and a place when I spent far too much time looking to the future instead of living in the moment. While listening to the song "Only You" by Yaz I said to my sister with... More »
In this day of cellular phones, blackberries, and burn out, it is important to take time to make connections with others. We may not have time to spare to socialize but certainly we can turn all of this new technology into an advantage. Why not view the internet as a way to facilitate new connections and create a virtual community? We see teenagers using instant messaging and chat rooms to create new friendships, can't we do the same? In fact, I think it is important that we do. Not only so that we are prepared and aware when our children... More »
It has been six years since I last had a good night's sleep. The first few months after my first child was born I think I experienced something like a drug addict goes through during withdrawal. I thought my days of all-night studying and weekend partying had prepared me for lack of sleep but I couldn't have been more wrong. Nothing can prepare you. I spent these first months in a haze, barely capable of brushing my teeth but somehow able to meet almost every need of my extremely demanding baby. Now that I have two kids and the... More »
Welcome to urbanmoms.ca! An online resource built by urban moms, for urban moms. I created this site out of inspiration and frustration. Inspired by the amazingly talented and diverse women I met and frustrated by advertisers' and companies' inability to truly understand and relate to modern women with families. Urbanmoms.ca is a place where you can come to find information, resources and advice, make connections with other mothers and, hopefully one day, to find a job that works for you and your family. If you have any ideas for content on the site or information that you would like to... More »
