Now You See Me is a cat and mouse game. It's not a whodunnit. It's a "how'd they do that?"The story centers on four brilliant magicians who each have a special talent. Daniel (Jesse Eiseberg) is an illusionist and his former assistant Henley (Isla Fisher) is an escape artist. Merritt (Woody Harrelson) is a hypnotist and mind reader and the magician who's been at it the longest, while Jack (Dave Franco, James Franco's brother) is a spoon-bending trickster and a pickpocket. After each receives a mysterious Tarot card, the foursome is brought together in a dingy Manhattan apartment. Linda Sinclair (Julianne Moore) is forty five-years old, prim and proper, loves classic literature and is - you guessed it - a high school English teacher. Single and living alone, Linda's most significant relationships are with her students and with the characters in the books she reads. One day, her former student Jason Sherwood (Michael Angarano) re-appears in town. Now twenty-six, Jason is disheartened by his unsuccessful attempts to become a playwright in New York. After reading Jason's thesis play, Linda is touched and inspired. Along with her school's drama teacher (played by Nathan Lane), Linda steps out of her comfort... More »

Behind the Candelabra is a film that was turned down by every major studio for being "too gay" Luckily, it has also found a home in HBO and premiered last night. It is good. It is really good. Directed by Steven Soderbergh (Michael Clayton, Magic Mike), the film is based on the 1988 memoir by Scott Thorson who was Liberace's live-in boyfriend and chauffeur for five years. The film opens in 1977 when teenage hunk Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) meets a much older pianist and performer Liberace (Michael Douglas) after one of his concerts. At the time, Liberace was the highest paid performer... More »
Matthew McConaughey has been on an amazing run of interesting films in the last few years. Gone are the days of light romantic comedies with questionable scripts (The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past). Starting in 2011's Lincoln Lawyer, he's made some great career choices playing interesting (and not always likeable) characters which showcase his natural acting talent. And starring in the title role in Mud follows that same trajectory. Part Stand By Me, part Beasts of the Southern Wild, Mud is a coming of age story about two fourteen year old boys who... More »
Ever since the 66th Cannes Film festival kicked off May 15th, I've been gleefully enjoying the photos of attending celebs as they strut their stuff on the Croisette. This morning, one person in particular caught my eye, but not for the reasons you might think. As I perused the photos from the photo agencies from this weekend, my eyes settled on a man who looked familiar - but not quite. Then it hit me, it's Keanu Reeves! Appearing on May 19th to promote his directorial debut in "The Man of Tai Chi", Reeves stands with the beach behind him looking...how shall I put this? Somewhat bloated and not... More »

Her doctors had estimated she had an 87% chance risk of breast cancer and 50% risk of ovarian cancer. "Once I knew this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could. It seemed to me that Jeanne Cooper was just always there. She's always been around - at least for as long as I've lived in North America. So when I heard today that she had died, it was almost as if someone I knew had passed away. I first saw Jeanne Cooper as "Katherine Chancellor" on The Young and The Restless when I was eleven years old. I had not been in Canada long and didn't speak the language particularly well. Home from school, I would count on our TV as a way of passively listening to the English language while trying to absorb all the... More »

She is best known as a talented Canadian singer and songwriter with hit albums and Juno Awards under her belt. Is there anything more spectacular than having Dame Helen Mirren (67) swear at you - while dressed as The Queen? A troupe of drummers outside the John Gielgud Theatre found out firsthand on Saturday when they got a royal telling-off - thanks to Mirren. According to The London Telegraph, the actress was on stage in the award-winning play The Audience portraying Queen Elizabeth II, when a group of drummers made so much noise outside the theatre that it was getting hard to ignore. What's a Dame to do? Address them of course - in full costume, complete with a tiara: "I was so upset from struggling... More »
Reese Witherspoon's arrest video has surfaced on TMZ and what can I say? I enjoyed watching it! Witherspoon has issued an apology and admitted to having one too many glasses of wine. That's pretty clear, because you'd have to be pretty drunk to mouth off to an officer when he is just doing his job. Until now, I thought the "Don't you know who I AM?" line was the best. But the Academy-Award winner can be heard saying typical things you'd hear in movies such as: "I'm an American citizen... I'm allowed to stand on American ground!" and "You're saying I'm obstructing... More »

Gwyneth Paltrow, aka People Magazine's "Most Beautiful Woman", attended the premiere of her movie Iron Man 3 and revealed quite a bit of herself. The 40 year-old showed up on the red carpet of El Capitan Theatre wearing a floor-length Antonio Berardi gown and seemed to forget to wear any underwear. The result? She revealed a view of her naked side bum for everyone in attendance. Of course, this was not an accident. The design of the dress has sheer side panelling which doesn't allow for any panties to be worn. She chose the dress knowing this and also knowing that it would create... More »
Say what??? Yes, what I am about to tell you is a true story. This is what went down. On Friday, Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon (37) was driving with her husband CAA agent Jim Toth (42) in Atlanta, Georgia where she is currently filming a movie. His car was pulled over by police after it was spotted driving in the wrong lane. As the officers were about to arrest him for driving under the influence (DUI) and failure to maintain a lane while driving, Witherspoon did not sit by quietly. Instead, she got into a war of words with the... More »
Are you looking forward to seeing Henry Cavill as Superman as much as I am? Because you should. You really should. Expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, the film is produced by "The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan. It also stars Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Superman's dad, Kevin Costner as his adoptive dad, Diane Lane as his adoptive mom and Amy Adams as love interest Lois Lane. After looking at the trailer, I think we can expect a few things: - It's a darker pallette than the Superman from the 1970's that many of us have seen as kids. This isn't Christopher Reeve's... Poor Justin Bieber. It seems the 19 year-old can't seem to do anything right these days. Maybe it was his break-up with Selena Gomez that unleashed all this. Maybe his intentions are misunderstood. Maybe it's just being a famous teenager growing up in the public eye. Take your pick, but in recent months, he's managed to offend or baffle: - Many fellow Canadians for wearing overalls and a backwards baseball cap to receive an award from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In response to the uproar, Bieber said he simply didn't have time to change after concert before meeting Harper. - Some people - for grabbing the... More »
Nothing like a little celebrity fodder to kick of a sunny Monday, so without further ado, here is my top five celebrity hall pass list (celebrities I can spend some quality time with without marital repercussion, including judgment or envy). 1. Jennifer Connelly (15 year reigning champion)I am not sure if it was the innocence of Career Opportunities or when she made the leap into more serious adult roles like Inventing the Abbots or Dark City or the very adult role in Requiem for a Dream, but I have always found her remarkably attractive even with her very robust eyebrows. Singer Miranda Lambert addresses rumours of infidelity regarding her marriage to singer Blake Shelton during the press conference at the Country Music Awards. It's the end of the Canadian Penny. Yes, that lonely coin that no one seems to care about. That coin that gets tossed into the change can or on the sidewalk. Now that the run and my 43rd birthday are out of the way, I can now move back into the somewhat challenging and precarious role of dad. Back in 1977, Atari inc. released a video game system that is pretty much seen as the precursor to the home video game systems used in almost 50 per cent of all households today. When we got an Atari, a post divorce we still love you gift, I was around 9 or ten years old. We were living in an apartment at the time and me and the other latch key kids would... More »

I remember seeing Spencer West last Fall at the massive We Day event in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre filled with school kids. Upon first glance you are speechless. And that's what happened. He silenced the entire arena. How can this guy defy the odds of what life has presented to him and still continue to be focused on the positive? To see the faces on the thousands of youths at the event was priceless - even my own son was filled with questions and was inspired that "if he can do what he wants...then so can I."Spencer lost... Let me start by saying - "note to self - it starts at 8' - considering my kid JUST entered the tub at 8, I was late to the game this week. I was in Ottawa for Race Weekend and decided, in between running, to take in some exhibits at the city's diverse museums. I could tell you how wonderful the Van Gogh exhibit at the National Gallery of Canada was, but I'm pretty sure you'd be able to figure that one out on your own. The real question is how was Sex: A Tell All Exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology? From the outset, with the beanbag chairs laid out (pun intended) for you to watch a video of conception and gestation, you know this isn't going to be... More »

There are advantages to being a Canadian. One of them, for me anyway, is being able to speak French. And while I use the term "speak French" very loosely, it has come in handy. For example, when interviewing a talented and handsome young dancer from French Guyana, it helped to put him at ease, especially at the end of a long day of media calls. When he can speak freely in his mother langues, the exuberance of his performances and passions are far more forthcoming. The downfall is that my vocab can only take me so far before the interview... As Black History Month comes to a close, it leaves me wondering if it makes an impact. Are the messages heard? Do young people get it? I love old time radio (OTR), and my all time favourite is Jack Benny. When Eddie Anderson was hired to play Rochester in 1937, he became the first African American to have a staring role on radio. Sharing top billing from the start, he was one of the most beloved members of the... More »
Billy Crystal is back hosting the Oscars this year. Over the years, Billy has brought some big laughs...remember when he came out as Hannibal Lecter? So good. But lets face it. We like to cry at the Oscars. We like a big, emotional, intelligent speech. I don't obsess over Will not having a dad. It's funny. You know what you know and since he's never had one, this is our normal. Frankly, besides Father's Day or when Will is doing something particularly annoying (which he couldn't POSSIBLY have inherited from me), I don't really think about his donor much. I'm beyond thankful for him but it's just not a focal point.People do ask me why I picked him in particular. In no order - this was why:1. Someone else had used him and had had a healthy kid.2. His family had no serious illness in... More »

One of my pet peeves is bad service. Be it in restaurants or hotels or shops... I just don't like it. I know I'm not alone here - no one does. And let me assure you - in my lifetime, I've been on the other end. I've walked a mile in the other person's shoes. I've been a waitress. I've worked in retail serving clients. It's not always an easy job because, let's face it - there are a lot of rude muthers out there... and such can be the worst part of doing jobs like these. It never fails to amaze me how one minute my children can be fighting like cats and dogs and then a few minutes later they are protecting each other from the wrath of the MOMMY. One would think that with so many siblings they would be eager to rat each other out, allowing them to be in the spot light for once as the really good child. HA! NEVER! Instead they allowed a new child to enter our humble home, one who could take the fall for anything and everything, and the best part? This new child is invisible! That's... More »

Matthew McConaughey has been on an amazing run of interesting films in the last few years. Gone are the days of light romantic comedies with questionable scripts (The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past). And starring in the title role in Mud follows that same trajectory. Part Stand By Me, part Beasts of the Southern Wild, Mud is a coming of age story about two fourteen year old boys who... More »

If I were to ask you to name a Polish director, you'd probably say Roman Polanski. Or you may name my favourite - the late Krzysztof Kieslowski. Andrzej Wajda or Anieszka Holland might also come to mind. But what about emerging young talent? That may be a tricky one. Poland continues to produce other talented directors and you've got a chance to discover their works for yourself at Ekran - Toronto Polish Film Festival. The Venue Toronto's historic Revue Cinema (at 400 Roncensvalles Ave.) is the primary location for viewing the films. Over 3,000 filmgoers are expected to attend during the run of... More »
Imagine that six US diplomats have taken refuge in a Canadian embassy during an Iranian Revolution in 1979. The revolutionaries haven't discovered them - yet. U.S.- Iranian relations are at a breaking point. You are a CIA rescue specialist and you have a couple of days to get them out before they are discovered. What do you do? Here's an idea: Pretend to be a Canadian film producer. Go into Iran and try to get the six out by posing them as a film crew scouting locations for a fictitious film called "ARGO". I saw this movie with hundreds of others, packed into the Winter Garden Theatre during TIFF. When the film's director David O. Russell (The Fighter) came to the podium, he delivered what was probably the shortest intro I've heard at TIFF. "I'd rather not set expectations or talk too much about the film. Just watch it and see what you think." Then all went dark and we all spent most of the two hours laughing and loving this movie. And we were not alone, because yesterday, TIFF announced that Silver Linings Playbook won The BlackBerry People's Choice Award, beating out... More »
TIFF'12 kicked off yesterday for 10 days of screening great films from all over the world. But the big celeb news of the day was the first public appearance of Kristen Stewart (22) since "the cheating scandal." Stewart has been a virtual recluse since July after her scandal-clad split with Robert Pattinson. She emerged from hiding yesterday in a big way by hitting the red carpet at TIFF. By many accounts the appearance was a hit. She looked great, signed autographs from supportive fans and spoke with journalist (although only about the movie). Check her out on the red carpet at US Weekly. She was... More »
I'll start with two confessions. One: I have a serious soft spot for teenage angst films. Two: I have not read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the 1999 book written by screenwriter and director Stephen Chbosky - but heard great things. So I when I attended a press screening of the film adaptation of the book at TIFF12, I was optimistic. The Perks of Being a Wallflower had its world premiere at TIFF and was directed by Chbosky, who also adapted his book into the screenplay. The film is set in the early '90s and is narrated by a... The stars are definitely aligning for TIFF12! The festival is presenting 372 films in total (289 feature-length and 83 short films) so it's no surprise that the number of internatonal stars and filmmakers set to hit Toronto's red carpet is mighty impressive. Sadly, "my famous husband" (aka George Clooney) will not attend TIFF this year, but I did find plenty of other celebs to get excited about. And so will you. Eva Mendes and boyfriend Ryan Gosling are rumoured to hit the red carpet together for the first time. Spanish husband-wife actors Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem will be here.... More »

Is there anyone out there who has not read "The Great Gatsby"? If we didn't read it on our own, we were introduced to the book in English class. I loved this book so of course, I'm excited to see the upcoming movie (and 3D version). This eagerly-anticipated version is directed by Baz Luhrmann (of Moulin Rouge fame). Luhrman's "The Great Gatsby" stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire at Nick Carraway. It was set to be released on December 25th, clearly timed for consideration at this year's Academy Awards. Well, in surprising turn... More »

Remember the time you first fell in love? When you thought adults were dumb, you may have had trouble fitting in and the only person who "got you" was your first love? It was you against the world and all you wanted to do was be with the object of your love, all the time. Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom takes us back to that time. When my buddy's wife called and said 'book a ticket, get down here,' I did. Even though my kid and I will be eating Mr. Noodle for the next month. I, like many others, have a massive love affair with NYC. I was late to come to the party though. I always figured that with my claustrophobia it would kill me. The first time I went was maybe... I've written this entry in my head over the last couple days in the car. This is how I blog. But then this morning I heard something on the news, and while the song remains the same, I'm taking a different spin on it. Def Leppard - Hysteria. The first CD I ever bought!!! I remember trucking off to university with my new CD player (how advanced!!) and a couple of new discs. Hysteria, Apetite for Destruction and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. Those were them but Hysteria was number one! My roommate Cath and I became the unofficial party headquarters... More »
I realize that I rarely write about my dad. Frankly, you could think I was an orphan if you didn't know me! So let me state for the record - I have an awesome dad. Growing up I always thought I was SO much like my mother but no, while I do have some of her traits, I am fully and totally my dad. The one big thing we share is our wanderlust. My first taste of travelling was going to Scotland and England with my parents. To this day, 25 years later, my dad and I get downright giddy... More »
I have a very strong pull to the singer songwriter types. Yes, those who know me will claim it's because they look like jesus and appear to not have not eaten or bathed in the last few months. I rarely date that type of guy but I can conjure elaborate fantasies of us travelling on a bus through Arizona, living on music, cheap beer and.... okay I'm back - sorry got lost there. ANYWAY. My trio of current faves are Josh Ritter (for his boyish charm and talent); Ryan Adams (for his eff you attitude and hypnotic tunes) and Ray Lamontagne... More »
Ah young love. Remember your first love? I don't necessarily mean your first full out serious romance (although I guess for many they are one in the same) but I mean that first, sweet...'oh my god is he going to hold my hand', type of deal. For me it was summer of Grade 11 (or maybe 12...it was looong time ago). I mentioned him in my post about fighting your insecurities, and even though he ditched me promptly when his ex returned in the picture, I have nothing but really sweet memories about the whole thing. And this song, it... More »
Week 2 of the Song Reminds of series...and let's take a trip overseas...both with the song and the memory for me. This week - it's the Radiohead classic - Fake Plastic Trees *how about a version when they're on Conan...before the whole Jay fiasco* I first heard Radiohead when I went backpacking in Greece 1997. I remember the year because I was at an insane backpackers on Corfu when we found out that Lady Di had been killed in a car accident. I was way too old to be staying there...so while the younguns played some naked volleyball and... More »
I was thinking about Wordless Wednesdays and Follow Fridays on Twitter...and I know I do the Random Friday WTFs here (which tend to come on Wednesday)...are you following me here... I loooove music. I work for a radio company so it's around me all day. At home, we have music on constantly and even though there is a frig of a lot of Wiggles, Will also appreciates my music. When he was signing...we were listening to Led Zeppelin in the car and it ended and he started signing for more! Good BOY! So this morning I heard Hold Me Now... More »
