It's about that time. The holidays have been and gone and by now you've come to terms with the inevitable: That was it. There are no more gifts coming in the mail, waiting at the FedEx office or forgotten under a friend's tree. What you've got is all that's coming. That's the bad news. The Good News? Who says you can't get yourself a little something. C'mon, all that frenzied Christmas shopping, Haunnakah baking and Chinese New Year prep? You DESERVE it. And since you've got traveling in your future I've got a few suggestions.

1. Eagle Creek luggage:
Why? It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Seriously. We're six months into our around the world trip and but for the dirt on the wheels the bags look as good as they did when we left home. We partnered them with packing cubes and they've kept everything from electronics cords to dirty laundry away from our each other.

2. A Roaming Plan you understand:
Admit it . You've had it happen to you. You decide to cross the border into Buffalo. You pop into Target, see the deal of the century and decide to call/email/text your best friend to see if you should pick up two. Fast forward 30 days and you're crying into your new favourite sweater about a $700 phone bill you weren't expecting. Not cool. We've been testing out the Rogers Plan on this trip. It's not cheap but it is set up to let you know up front how much data you're buying and has alerts to let you know when you've used, ½, ¾ and finished. It won't let you keep going unless you opt in for a package.
It keeps you from doing something stupid again.

3. A Vitamin you'll actually take and take with you:
I have cupboards full of good intentions. Bottles of Omega 3s and Multivitamis and Iron; Calcium in droves. How often do I down the little suckers? Next to never. And yet... about a year ago I found Iron Kids for the boys and later got involved with the adult version. They are gummy bears but loaded up with vitamins so that I can get my Multis, B6, Vitamin D and more by seemingly eating fruit juice flavoured candy! And let me tell you I have no problem remembering to do that. Sold.

4. Gear you'll actually use:
I'm not ashamed to tell you. I've been wearing the same clothes for six months. They've been washed in Laundromats, by Cambodian women and in hotel sinks. And they still look good! The catch? We took some key pieces with us from Tilley. Yup, that Tilley! And I've been impressed. They look brand new, and after six months clothes that make you feel good when you get in 'em is something you like to wear. Leave your old T's at home and stock up on stuff that can survive your travels.

5. A ticket somewhere you've always wanted to go
I don't want to be the one to break the bad news but someone's got to do it. You won't live forever. Heck, not even tomorrow is promised. You owe it to yourself and the days you have left to take that trip you've been dreaming of. You want to go to Africa? Start the process. Find out how much it costs. Plan the vacation time. Nothing good comes of waiting. Not even for the good presents. Get 'em yourself.

Sometimes we all just need a little getaway to keep us going, especially at this time of year as the days get shorter and the weather cooler. My favourite go-to spot for a quick girls weekend or family refresh is Blue Mountain Resort just outside of Collingwood, Ontario. It is just 2 hours from Toronto but a world away from the hustle and bustle of my busy life.

Blue is an all-season resort with the best skiing in Ontario in the winter, beautiful scenery and lots to do in spring and fall plus pools, beach and local activities all summer long. And they are always adding more options for fun and adventure for their visitors.

In fact, there are a few recently launched brand new and exciting additions to the experience at Blue!

A few weeks ago on a much needed girls weekend our group discovered Ridge Runner. Ontario's first mountain coaster offers beautiful views up the mountain and an adrenaline rush on the way down. For me it was full speed all the way down the hill!

The end of the line on Ridge Runner! Woohoo!

One of the things we did and had a ton of fun was a round of mini golf at the newly developed Cascade Putting Course. This course is not for light-weights (or easily frustrated and competitive kids - young or old). It was challenging and made for some seriously good times.

Lots of fun and laughter on the golf course!

A great way to experience Blue and the surrounding area is to follow the Apple Pie Trail. The trail consists of suggestions on everything from restaurants and shops to local adventures and wine tastings. We were fortunate to have to chance to check out a few of the stops on the Apple Pie Trail:

#1 - Café Chartreuse in Collingwood. www.cafechartreuse.com Where we enjoyed a delicious breakfast in boho styled café right on the main drag in Collingwood.

Enjoying a latte at Collingwood's Café Chartreuse.

#2 Espresso Post in Blue Mountain Village. www.espressopost.com Another fab spot for a quick, casual bite right in the heart of the village. But it was wonderful. And there are certainly tons of options for adventure and activity in the village and surrounding area. So, if you and your family are looking for a quick break I would highly recommend Blue.

And, if you act fast, ski lovers can still take advantage of the Early Bird Special for their Season's Passes. But only until November 6th!

Do you have a favourite getaway spot or activity? There are things about a hotel stay that I love. There is nothing quite like being catered to by a great concierge or coming back to a freshly cleaned room after a day at the beach and knowing that the sand that your kids are tracking into the room will be taken care of by someone else.
But if you're planning on being away for an extended period of time there's another option you might want to try.

Apartment rentals are gaining in popularity and one of the groups jumping on the bandwagon the fastest? Families.

We were asked to test out a Roomorama rental while staying in Bondi Beach in Australia. Here's what we learned and why you might want to consider it for your next trip:

1. Cost - Depending on whether you're looking for a simple apartment, a standalone home or something you'll be bragging about for years to come, choosing an apartment rental can save you a lot of money, particularly if you're a larger family (read as +3), that might have to consider more than one room if you'd booked into a hotel. There are a variety of options and price points meaning you can have a little more control on how quickly you blow your budget.

2. Space: We've been on the road for just over 100 days. Most of our time in hotels have been with four of us in one room. Trust me, personal space, and the lack of it, can become an issue when you're traveling for more than a weekend. Apartment rentals offer the possibility of not having to leave the room to stretch your arms.

Space, glorious space!

3. Kitchens: A big part of a vacation for me is the fact that I don't have to make dinner, but if you're traveling for an extended period of time with kids, you'll be grateful for the options that mean you don't have to watch them eat another chicken nuggets and french fries kids' menu meal in a restaurant. The ability to warm up leftovers, whip up mugs of hot chocolate or even make a pot of pasta will increase your popularity tenfold.

Just two ears of corn right? Wrong! Fresh vegetables that aren't coated in fried crumbs! A rarity in kid's meals.

4. Neighbourhoods - This was a big one for me. Staying at our apartment in Woolloomoolo meant that we could wander to the local pub, chat with locals at the community centre, rent a movie to watch and feel a little less like tourists in the city.

Wooloomoolo Apartment made us feel comfortable

5. Freedom to be YOUR family - Sometimes a hotel stay puts me into uber-mom mode. The apartment we chose felt like a home which meant even I relaxed a little. We watched a movie, popped corn, did laundry, chatted with the families down the hall and genuinely chilled out. And that my friends, can't be overrated.

Heather Greenwood Davis is the Globetrotting Mama. After years of

Notice the drool on the lips of the people going in and the smiles on the faces of those leaving.

Also notice that no container has less than two scoops.

This despite the fact that the establishment is only a year old and scoops cost about twice what you'd pay the ice cream man.

But one taste of the stuff and you understand.

My six-year old son Cameron was a non-believer until Coleridge offered him up the chance to sample his latest batch straight from the mixer.

Cam was on board until he heard the flavour: Caramel. Not. Interested.

We pushed and eventually he cautiously peeked his tongue out between his lips and took the tiniest taste from the taster spoon. That's when his eyes turned to saucers, his smile stretched across his face and the spoon went clean.

That good.

And good for you. Coleridge says that compared to the 28% fat in ice cream, gelator weighs in with only 7%! That's right: you can have four scoops for the fat content cost of one!

But it's the taste that will really grab you. Coleridge has been known to spend 15 hour days hand crafting his flavours with Tahitian vanilla pods, Chocolate from Madagascar and more. And his skills are hard come by: He is the first (and only) person outside of Italy to be recognized by the Carpigiani Group as a "Gelato pioneer." In fact, he'll compete on behalf of Canada in the 2012 Gelato World Cup this January.

You won't find this stuff anywhere outside of Vancouver but believe me it is worth the trip.

Just ask these guys.

For more information visit www.bellagelateria.com (@bellagelateria) and for other Vancouver hotspots visit www.tourismvancouver.com

I do a lot of traveling with my clan. From international flights to family road trips we have it pretty much covered. When traveling to a family resort there are a few things you definitely need to consider.

Are you thinking of booking a getaway with your clan? Check out my Top 5 Family Resort Must Haves before you book:

Family Resort Must Have #5 - Good Food!

When I go on vacation I like to eat! But also, I like to know that there are options so a) we are not always eating the same thing and b) that there are some healthy alternatives if we don't feel like a full and filling meal every time. Take the time to read reviews, look into resort based fare and local restaurants before you book.

This summer my family and I stayed at Mont Tremblant outside of Montreal. The resort had a huge range of restaurants from pizzerias to adult-only fine dining. One of our favourites was the European inspired La Savoie where we had a delicious meal (over) indulging in a variety of fondue.

Feasting on fondue!

Family Resort Must Have #4 - A Kitchen!

Now, this one is not always required so let me clarify. If we are at an all inclusive resort and Must Have #10 has been met then we only require a bar fridge to store some drinks and healthy snacking options. However, if you don't want to eat out every night then a kitchen is a must.

This summer we stayed at the wonderful and secluded Smuggler's Notch in Vermont. We did eat at the resort once and traveled into Stowe for dinner one evening but it was so great to relax in our condo with the other family we were traveling with and enjoy a good meal. It also gave us flexibility for kids' breakfast and their packed lunches at camp. And, most importantly, we made sure everyone had access to healthy foods the whole time!

Family Resort Must Have #3- Kids Clubs or Camps!

We have made this mistake before but won't ever do it again. Not all parents or kids would feel the same way but when we vacation my kids want their own activities. They want to explore and have adventures with kids their own age. In other words, we need Kids Clubs!

Pirate Day at the Kids Club at Beaches Turks and Caicos. Arrrr.

Whether on a Disney Cruise or in the mountains of Vermont, good kids programs are critical. And make sure to investigate kids programming based on the age of your children. Some places are fabulous with babies and smaller children but tweens and teens may not be their focus. Take some time to talk to friends and look at consumer reviews online before booking.

Family Resort Must Have #2- Variety!

This is especially important if you are going to be at a resort for more than a few days. One vacation we took was basically get up, eat, go to the pool, eat, sit on the beach, eat and drink, watch the (same) show (every night), go to sleep and repeat. For seven whole days. By the end of the week the whole family was going stir crazy and we were more than ready to go home. We learned that lesson the hard way.

From that trip forward we have done our due diligence and made sure that there are plenty of options for everyone.

Waterpark fun for everyone at Smuggler's Notch!

Ziplining at Smuggler's Notch!

Rock climbing at Mont Tremblant.

The character breakfast at Beaches Turks and Caicos.

The evening Entertainment on the Disney Cruises.

Family Resort Must Have #1 - Comfortable Accomodation!

This one really needs no further explanation. Without comfortable accommodation the rest of my list really doesn't matter. If you are traveling with your family and people don't sleep well no amount of beach and cocktails with umbrellas are going to fix that. Believe me. We have had a few of these and I would rather not travel at all than have to endure tight or uncomfortable sleeping quarters.

Here are a few that more than made the grade:

I have seen a recent trend emerging for family road trips. Maybe this is a symptom of the struggling economy or maybe it is that families are looking for variety and having a car allows this to happen. Suddenly, one road trip can turn into a bunch of mini-vacations.

I think this is the perfect way to see Florida. The State of Florida has so much to offer from pristine beaches to eco reserves to theme parks and it is a shame to travel all the way down there and confine yourselves to just one experience. By driving down or renting a car while there you can get a taste of everything Florida has to offer!

Me & my hubby road tripping through Florida's Gulf Coast in style!

Recently my husband and I were lucky enough to spend a few days on the Gulf Coast of Florida. We rented a convertible and drove from the Tampa airport to our first destination, Anna Maria Island. About 40 minutes from the airport we pulled up to our private beach cottage in our little piece of paradise!

My husband and I LOVED Anna Maria. It was a perfect respite for the two of us. Beautiful beaches, no high rises, cute shops and restaurants and relaxation. Although maybe a bit too suburban for some, we loved the quaint, simple lifestyle of this spot as a stop for a few days on our road trip and would definitely return. (For more on our stop in Anna Maria read my blog post here.)

When we left Anna Maria we drove less than half an hour to St. Pete Beach where we stayed at the Tradewinds Island Grand. Although only minutes away these two Gulf Coast destinations offer something totally different!

Tradewinds Island Grand had everything a family could want. With newly renovated rooms starting as low as $149/night in the summer and beautiful, vast, white sand beaches, this is definitely a spot to add to your Gulf Coast itinerary!

Enjoying the gorgeous stretch of beach and ocean along Tradewinds Island Grand!

Tradewinds Island Grand is definitely geared to families. With a pirate show, bungee trampoline, water park, kid's clubs, and more there is plenty to keep everyone busy. Be prepared that some of these are extra so you should take the time to plan your activities ahead of time.

The resort has plans for everyone in your party from children to grandparents with a variety of room options and activities created for specific age groups, even your teen! Or you can decide to stroll the beach and enjoy your private beach chair. One day my husband and I spent the whole day on the beach and even had a little nap!

Relaxing on the beach.

Tradewinds is quite big which means you have a number of options for pools, activities and also food. Our room had a great full kitchen so we enjoyed our breakfast and lunch in our room or on the beach (another great way to make this a VERY affordable stop!). Most of the restaurants were what one would expect from a large resort but I actually had the best meal of our whole road trip at the surprisingly fancy Palm Court Italian Grill right on site. As Tradewinds Island Grand is family focused I was not expecting much but was thrilled with this little hidden gem. The service was exceptional, the ambiance perfect and the food delicious. What a treat!

My husband enjoying our dinner at Palm Court!

As I embark on another Florida road trip next week I'm curious, have you traveled to Florida this way? If so, where did you go? Please share your tips and experiences!

*Portions of this trip were sponsored. The opinions and experiences and are all mine.

I'm the bearer of bad news.
With only a few weeks to go before the May 24 long weekend, chances are great that if you haven't already booked a getaway, you won't be having one.
And a long weekend with no planned getaway just about guarantees that there will, at some point over the four days, be a universal child-voiced cry of "I'm bored!" (There will also likely be a few "She's hitting me!" and "I had it first." but you get the gist.)
And while you'll want to snap back with a loving "KNOCK IT OFF!" every time, there is a way you can make these battles work for you.
Because while expensive flights and workplace bans on visiting travel booking sites may try to thwart your plans, they can't take your dreams.

The complaint: "I'm hungry"
The usual retort: "I'm mom. Nice to meet you."
Instead: They've got to eat and if the weather holds up (who are we kidding? We're Canadians! Rain or shine we're out there) throwing some burgers and hot dogs on the grill will take you about 5 minutes and make you an instant hit. And while they're noshing on your goodwill, you can begin dreaming about a trip to Memphis where barbecue - in even the fanciest places - comes with extra napkins to catch the goodness dripping from your chin and not a single fork.

The complaint: "I'm thirsty"
The usual retort: "Grab a drink!"
Instead: Give them a lemonade Stand. Your 30 minutes in the kitchen helping them make a pitcher of the sour stuff will buy you a good few hours of them sitting on the front porch waiting for a sucker. And while they do that you can relax on your front porch with a drink of your own, admire your munchkins' foolish perseverance and dream about a trip to Italy's wine country.

The complaint: "We're Bored."
The usual retort: "Tell your father!"
Instead: Backyard camp out! Take the leftover hot dogs, add the still-full pitcher of lemonade, throw up a tent (blanket over a few chairs works too) and voila! - Camping Adventure tailor made for the kiddies. If the kids force you to take it further, arm yourselves with marshmallows, sticks and insect repellent and rough it for a weekend at a local campground. And while you're scratching the bug bites and picking ants out of your daughter's hair, dream of the Tented Camps at the Four Seasons in Thailand.

And first thing Tuesday morning? Book this year's summer vacation. You don't want to have this problem again, do you?
So spill it. What are you doing for the long weekend?

I wasn't sure what to do about the red carpet.
As an invited guest to the Opening Night of Sprockets - The Toronto International Film Festival for Children and Youth - I figured I could walk down it but as a member of the media covering the event didn't I belong with the paparazzi?
Luckily, I had my boys with me and they knew EXACTLY where they wanted to be - with Lightning McQueen.
A life-sized replica of the famous race car sat at the foot of the red carpet and the boys wasted no time in checking it out.
And when the evening's special guest, Disney Pixar Animator Don Crum, came out to pose with the car he created, the fans went wild.
So began an exciting evening at the new TIFF headquarters. For the next hour and a half the boys ran from McQueen to a Pizza Nova sponsored pizza party, took turns posing as a Toy Story character and munched on "cake pops" desserts.
The resulting grease and sugar high made me a little nervous that Crum might have a wall-climbing catastrophe on his hands as they settled into their seats for the movie.
This was, after all, a 7 p.m. start on a Friday night and yawns were as commonly heard as "When is it starting?" among the crowd.
But just as kids started to fidget, it started and all fears were put to rest.
Hawaiian Vacation is a 6-minute short (It took longer for me to buy our popcorn.) but somehow, the movie manages to offer non-stop laughs and leaves no one saying, "That's it?"

Featuring an all-star Toy Story 3 cast including all of the favourites like Woody and Buzz, the story takes the audience through Ken's devastation at realizing that after months of planning the perfect place to share Barbie's first kiss, he's been left behind when new owner Bonnie heads off with her parents to Hawaii - leaving her school backpack behind.
The toys decide to transform the bedroom into a "Hawaiian Vacation" and hilarity ensues.
The short was followed by a sneak peek at the all new, sure-to-be-blockbuster CARS2 which had kids throughout the theatre on the edge of their seats.
As a bonus, Crum then spent some time talking about his job as an animator and showing the process that goes into producing these films which was both fascinating and exhausting to think about. (It can take anywhere from four to six years to produce one movie; drawings are often revised numerous times; and you need 24 perfect drawings for every one second of movie frame!)
His message throughout is clear: It's something he loved to do since he was a child (he shared some of those early drawings with us too) and it's a passion he's turned into a career.
Still, it's after 8 by the time Crum is deep into his presentation the kids are shifting and losing interest. They came for McQueen, not Crum, and it's woefully past their bedtime. We sneak out quickly as it comes to a close.
As I tuck my six-year old into bed, he's teary.
A long week marred by illness and excitement, a long day at school and the dark sleep-filled drive home only to be woken in order to change for bed, have left him grumpy and disoriented.
"I feel sad," he says with half-closed eyes as I tuck him in.
I rub his back and remind him of two scenes from the movie and he begins to giggle and grin.
Parents everywhere better prepare themselves: Pixar has another winner.

Heather Greenwood Davis is heading off this summer on a 1-year travel adventure with her husband and two kids. It's here! It's here!
Spring - with its green grass and promises of sunny days and <strike>warm</strike> less cold temperatures - is finally here!
You made it through the snow, slush and biting winds of winter with your sanity (most of it) and your kids intact. If there's anyone who deserves a reward it's you.
I know what you're thinking: March Break is behind you and summer holidays are months away. What's a girl - with a packed bag and desperate sense of longing - to do?
Go anyway.
Whether you're gathering your girlfriends/ your kids/ your significant other or heading off on your own, travel deals and great destinations are calling your name. It would be rude not to answer.
Struggling with where to go?

Here are 5 places to start:

1. Paris - The shopping, the delicate pastries, the shopping, the museums, the shopping...I think you're getting the picture here.

2. Cancun - I know it's where you went to party in your youth, but I'm telling you Cancun has some great options now that you're, um, more mature. My latest favourite: Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Resort - a 5 diamond resort with a 5 diamond French Mediterranean restaurant and a new 40,000 square foot Gem Spa where treatments last for hours.

3. Istanbul, Turkey - Standing in front of the Blue Mosque while hearing the call to prayers over the loudspeakers overhead will redefine what beauty feels like. Age-old architecture, amazing cuisine and maybe, just maybe, a hand-knotted $1000 rug as a souvenir round out the reasons it's a favourite.

4. Ottawa - Some think of Ottawa as a winter haven but for me the city comes into its best each spring. The tulips are out and this walkable city is transformed into one big, easy-access, neighbourhood. Not to be missed: high tea at the Chateau Laurier, a walk along the Rideau Canal, a meal at Murray Street Kitchen and a stop in at the National Gallery.

5. Miami - A resurgence in the popularity of the downtown core and a free people mover that makes it easy to see it from tip to tail make the city visitor friendly. Plus you're steps from beach and sand, with plenty of night spots to get your groove on and a gourmet dining scene that will make you an instant fan. It's the perfect precursor to summer.

Need help taking the Spring Getaway leap? Leave me a comment telling me about the Spring getaway spot you'd most like to escape to and you could win a $250 travel voucher from Transat Holidays to help make it happen.
I don't have any but I've been one
so I can tell you with authority that traveling with a teenager isn't easy.
Let's face it, while my kids may be all cuddles and sunshine now, there will
come a day when they'll want to spend their holidays as far away from the
'rents as possible.

I blame the stereotypical "family
vacation" for this. Parents plan a trip filled with things they want to do or things they think their kids should be doing instead of getting their
kids involved in the planning.

My advice? Start by telling your
teen that unless they get involved you intend to spend every waking hour as
"family together time" and I bet they'll jump at the chance to help.

You can up your cool factor by suggesting
the spots listed below to start. The common denominator: They aren't as
highly supervised or rigorously scheduled as the typical "kids" club and in
many cases offer the types of activities that parents would do themselves if it
wouldn't be so embarrassing.

1. Club Crush, Atlantis: Last year it was
the kids club. This year it's teens
that benefit from a massive influx of cash ($11-million) and new cutting-edge
technology. The 14,000
square foot space includes:

an Internet Lounge (where multi-touch computers, interactive surface tables and a
collection of iPads allow them to do everything from editing photos to getting on Facebook to playing Angry Birds),

a gaming Studio with a 22-foot, floor to ceiling "Gaming tree" that holds 32 flat
screen tvs and 24 controller based gaming consoles including PS3, Wii and Xbox
360; 10 private reservable cabanas with all the latest technology including Kinect
for Xbox 360; and two 65" flat screen televisions that stream live competition
play.

a 1,500 square-foot Dance Club complete with video
walls, performance stage, VIP sections and doormen.

Cost: $25/person Hours: 5:30 PM - 1AM. Teens must be aged 13-17 to gain the personalized membership card they need for entry. To take a sneak peek click here.

2. Vibe, Disney Dream Cruise Ship: Nothing
spells fun like being trapped with your parents and your younger siblings on a
ship in the middle of the ocean. Wait! Hold the eye-roll! Turns out Disney's newest ship actually offers a
space that makes that statement true. Now teens who tire of wandering the
ship's food offerings and sports outlets have a place to simply hang. The
indoor/outdoor space was created just for teens aged 14-17 and requires
swipe-card access. Inside there's almost 9,000 square feet of space to explore.
Computers allow you to create and edit videos, play computer games, access
social media applications, DJ, mix dance tracks and more. Walk through to the
outdoor patio and you'll find a private teens-only outdoor deck with chaise
lounges for sunbathing, wading pools misters and more along with ping-pong and
foosball tables. It's fantastic to look at, but the
closest you (mom or dad) will get to seeing what it looks like is here.

3. Coast, Ritz Carlton: Ritz Carlton, whose much-lauded kids program has been getting rave reviews (including this one from me!) is now bringing on great spaces for the teen crowd. Guests aged 13 to 17 will find Coast at The Ritz Carlton Palm Beach. Focused on providing a space that keeps young people excited and energized the area offers the chance to create their own DJ mix and upload it to their iPod, play video games, surf the internet, play billiards, or just hang out and play pool or Guitar Hero. And for those teens who prefer beauty over battling, Beauty@Coast is an upscale salon for teens where make-up application, hair styling, manicures, dress-up and more can be commemorated with a glamour shot. And then at night, Coast transforms into a teen-friendly club with music and dancing. Take a peek here.

4. Trench Town and Liquid, Beaches Resorts: Beaches all-inclusive offerings mean teens won't come begging for cash to make the most of their time. Group facilitators are there to help teens do the things the teens want to do, not the other way around. Learn to DJ? Sure. Head out to windsurf? Alright. Just hang? That's cool too. Trench Town, a Bob Marley inspired clubhouse, offers everything from basketball to foosball, and at night Club Liquid offers a teens-only party space in a Miami-esque atmosphere. With beach bonfires, unlimited options and activites that run late into the night, your kids will be the ones begging to come back for a family vacation again next year.

You've done it again. Waited too long to book something and now you're wondering where to go, what to do and how much it's all going to cost.
But fear not.

While it's true that the best price breaks for the getaway - when everyone and their grandmother wants to go away - were probably to be had a few months ago, there are still plenty of options for a memorable Spring Break.

1. Go where you know: Who says March Break travel has to be fresh and new? Did you go somewhere last year? Did you have a good time? Call them up and see if you can get in again. Sometimes we put too much pressure on finding a *new* place, that we forget that something tried and true can be just as much fun the second (or third) time around. You can find 5 of my favourites here.

2. Go now because you can: Yup. It might cost ya but if there's somewhere you've wanted to visit with the family and the struggle is as much about finding the time as finding the money, and March Break provides the time...go now. A week off during the spring may be exactly what your family needs. Dig deep and find a way to make it happen.

3. Stay home ( not "home-home" but in town) Check with your local hotels and see
if there's a deal at that new hotel you've been dying to check out. Make a
schedule to visit things you've read about but never actually seen in your own
city or one nearby. Act like a tourist: Send the kids to kids club, order room service and
swim in the pool.

4. Stay home (no really, "home - home") We're doing this this year. Obviously we
love to travel but what we've realized, and what I
think a lot of families are realizing, is that between kids in school and at
lessons, and parents at work and meet-ups with colleagues, we really don't spend
much actual time at home. It doesn't mean you have to be cooped up
inside. Think ahead about ways you can explore your neighbourhood, plan walks,
family game days, have neighbours over or go to their place.

Try to do the
things that make hanging with family fun....and leave the laundry for next week
when you're "back" from vacation.

My family and I just came back from a 2 1/2 week vacation to gorgeous New Zealand. Now don't be mislead, we are not an adventurous family. Trecking half way across the world for for the thrill is not us. The simple and boring truth is that my husband is from New Zealand and we love going back to visit family and friends as much as possible.

Our girls have been to New Zealand 4 times in total, the first being when my oldest was 3 years old and my youngest 3 months. So you may be wondering how the girls manage on such a long journey. It's most definitely an arduous trip, taking over 24 hours from start to finish. I am proud to say that the girls are awesome travelers. The girls know that the flights are super long so they don't even bother to ask, "are we their yet"? I must admit that I'm extremely thankful that the 14 hour leg (Vancouver to Auckland) is a night-flight and the girls sleep most of it. I also am very grateful to the developers of the entertainment systems on Air New Zealand. The girls have access to loads of their favourite TV shows and movies.

Our trips to New Zealand mainly focus on spending time with my husband's family. If you ask my girls to choose anywhere in the world to vacation their answer always is New Zealand. They want to spend time as much time as they can with their nana, granddad, uncles and aunts. This trip was even more special as my husband's sister had her first baby.

With so much to see and do in New Zealand I would recommend that you need a minimum of 3 weeks to explore this wonderful country. New Zealand is divided into 2 parts; the North and South Island. In the North Island you will find Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand. This sprawled city has all the modern amenities that you would expect of any world class travel destination. Auckland in known as 'The City of Sails', as their are many of activities done on the water (whale watching trips, fishing, sailing) as well as numerous islands scattered around Auckland harbor to be explored. The South Island has a more rugged and majestic terrain, an outdoor adventurers paradise.

New Zealand is truly a dream vacation destination for anyone interested in enjoying all the beauty that nature has to offer. Here you can surf, ride the rapids, bungee jump, kayak, canoe, cycle, and even ski in the winter.

While I would recommend New Zealand as a family destination the cost and time necessary to journey to this side of the world are quite prohibiting.

Take a look through my photo album as I share my favourite memories.
Nostalgic TV theme parks offer a chance to celebrate your own Childhood.

Even though the twinkling lights and presents by the truckload are behind you, chances are you're still getting a little misty-eyed at all of the friends and family you hung out with or missed during the holidays. I love watching my own boys create holiday memories that I know they'll look back on down the road. What I also love? The opportunity, if only for a few hours, to step back into my own childhood. Turns out we don't have to limit our childhood reminiscing to holiday mornings. Here are 5 spots where you can force your kids to relive your childhood any time of the year. (Hey! It's your duty as a parent!)

1. Sesame Place, Pennsylvania : They had me at Cookie Monster, but the great thing about Sesame Place is that your kids won't even realize that this trip is as much about you as it is about them because the beloved television show is still so much a part of their lives. Sure the Street didn't have the Orange day-glo outfits or magical boomboxes of some of today's favourite characters but who couldn't fall in love with an 8 -foot tall bird and a grouch living in a can? Sesame Place perfectly mixes the fun kids love at any theme park (watershows, roller coasters, parades) with character meet and greets, breakfasts and other interactions. Don't leave without taking a photo on the steps of 123 sesame.

2. Muppets at Disney World Resort , Florida: It may be Mickey's house but there's plenty of room for Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang at the Florida theme park. At Jim Henson's Muppet-Vission 3D, a 17-minute movie takes you right into the Muppet world and is a great introduction to the beloved Muppet show. The kids will recognize a friend or two and you get to introduce them to favourites like The Swedish Chef, Miss Piggy and Animal! The gift shop across from the movie is worth a stop too.

3. Astroboy Museum, Kyoto, Japan: My kids haven't visited this one yet, but the resurgence of the popular boy robot thanks to a movie release a few years ago makes it a must stop on our upcoming trip around the world. I can still remember the look on my husband's face when we saw the sky-high statue celebrating Astroboy as we disembarked in Kyoto almost 10 years ago. These days you'll find a museum paying tribute to the man who created the boy who was part machine just outside the train terminal.

4. Superheroes, Sailing Strongmen, Mounties and More, Universal Studios, Florida: Harry Potter may be the rage now, but this theme park's celebration of several of the characters parents will remember best makes it a must-see for the next generation. Start with Dudley Do-Right. The Canadian Mountie and his nemesis Snidely Whiplash are at the heart of a flume ride that has a 75-foot drop below an "exploding" dynamite shack. Then move on to the superheroes of your youth: The Amazing Spider- Man, Dr. Seuss and Popeye's ship are a few of the others that will bring back good memories.

5. Christmas Story House, Cleveland, Ohio: Tis the season. If you're the kind of guy or gal who still calls their siblings and can erupt into fits of laughter by simply saying things like "You'll shoot your eye out!" this place is for you. From the leg lamp that sits in the living room to the kitchen sink you can climb under it's all been recreated to look exactly like the movie. Die hard fans come in November for the annual conference and celebration of all things related to the classic. After snapping a family photo by the Christmas tree be sure to regale your kids with what winters were like when you were a kid. They LOVE that.

See how much fun the kids are having?

Heather Greenwood Davis is a freelance travel writer currently planning a 1-year around the world trip with her husband and 2 sons. With the gift-giving season upon us, travelers everywhere are rubbing their hands together in the hopes of finding two first class (the kids can fly coach) tickets to somewhere warm wrapped in pretty paper. And while chances are slim that you'll be able to deliver on that wish, you can help another parent out by giving them a travel-related gift that helps make traveling with kids at least a little bit easier.

From the wish I'd thought of that file:
1. Problem: "Which Black Bag is mine?"
Solution: A wireless luggage finder! Snap the gadget onto the handle of your case and never worry about finding your black bag again. Opt for the LED version and when your bag arrives you'll see the tag blinking like a Christmas tree (you pick the colours) on the belt. Sure it elicited a few stares but hey, small price to pay for not lifting every black bag off that came before it. And who needs a name tag on your bag when you can see someone rolling off with the blinker from miles away. Those who are a little more conservative will like the wireless key chain recognition device that uses a radio frequency tag and will vibrate as your bag approaches. Genius. www.easy-2-pick.com (LED Retails for $9.95; wireless clicker is $24.95)

2. Problem: "I know I put that gameboy/DS/ipod somewhere."
Solution: Sesame Street's Elmo Mini Game Pack
Nothing will make you want to turn your car around faster than a slew of "I'm boreds" coming from the back seat. I'm not a fan of video games all the time but I do like the idea of having a diversion (and threatenable object) handy when you need a break. And I'm a HUGE fan of kids carrying their own stuff. This officially licensed "Mini Game Pack" solves both of those issues. The miniature backpack shape comes with a clip that can attach to your child's bigger bag and has plenty of pockets to hold the gaming system and all of its accessories. The Sesame Street logo (pick from Elmo or Cookie Monster) will be a hit with the kids and keep all of that go-to goodness in one spot. www.dreamgear.net (Retails for $14.99)

3. Problem: I've got a baby, not lost my sense of style!"
Solution: Magz Bagz
Megan Turvolgyi loved fun and funky bags. She'd co-ordinate them with her outfits and her shoes. Then she had a baby and....still had a sense of style!
"As a woman you love your handbag and then you have a baby and you give up all the cutesy things," she recalls. When she couldn't find the bags she needed to carry the new stuff (diapers, bottles, wipes, gear...) she set out to make her own and Magz Bagz were born. "Some people can look at something conceptually and guess at what might work but having children and knowing what I needed the bag to do made me the perfect person to do it." The bags are made to order from 100% cotton in Canada (you choose the fabric and style) and custom laminated (UV inhibitors and Phthlate free!) Best of all you won't have to change who you are to carry them. www.magz-bagz.com (Retails for $28 -$150)

4. Problem: "I've got a bag, 20 pounds of camera equipment and 10 pounds of baby to carry and only two arms."
Solution: Airbak Focus Tech Photography Backpack
Bad backs are one of the less than joyful surprises of parenting. They creep up on you once that 5-pound bundle of joy turns into a 30-pound squirming bundle of a boy. Now try lifting him and dragging your suitcase with a camera bag strap around your neck. Not fun. The Airbak bag has adjustable lumbar support and is designed to take the pressure off your upper and lower back with a "patented system that redistributes the weight to your upper buttocks" (hello!). With several compartments that can hold both your clothing and multiple lenses it can be your all in one carry-on for a short trip. (Airbak Technology is also available in a host of kid-friendly and adult friendly backpack options. www.airbak.com (Retails for $99)

And as our gift to you? Four lucky readers can take home one of the four solutions as a prize. Simply share a dilemma you've faced traveling with kids (below) for your chance to win. Readers will be selected at random. The contest closes on November 28, 2010.

Click here for contest Rules and Regulations.

For more family travel musings visit www.globetrottingmama.com
