So, we're two months into the new school year, Thanksgiving is behind us (and based on the amount of pumpkin cheesecake I ate I mean that quite literally), and a long cold winter lies ahead. It's an easy time to think about curling up by a fire or a television and hibernating for months.

But have you noticed what happens to hibernating bears?...they come out in the springtime looking droopy, lazy, hairy, and definitely not bikini worthy. Don't be a bear...make it your priority to stay active throughout these dreary months so that you emerge a little less ursine.
This is a great time to try out a new activity. These are perfect days for getting out for a run and hitting some trails. Find a community centre and try out a new class...have you always wanted to master yoga, pilates, zumba or spinning? This lull between the summer activities and the holiday season calendar cram is a perfect opportunity.
For me, there is no better motivating force than new clothes. Old Navy has recently introduced a new line, Active by Old Navy. Made of quality cotton, spandex and compression fabrics, pieces start at $16.50 and are available at stores across Canada or online. These pieces are much higher quality and include many more features than the low prices indicate.
The compression tank includes reflective materials and a zippered pocket (perfect for keys or gym cards). It retails for $26.94 and comes in a variety of colours and patterns.
The compression pants offer the same zippered pocket in the back yoke, pique mesh at back of knees for movement and breathability, and a stylish cut, all for $34.94.
Throw on this compression jacket with thumb loops, flat-lock seams and a zipper from the hem to the chin. It's only $44.94 and it will take you easily from the gym to the schoolyard to the grocery store, looking good and feeling great.
Are you looking for more motivation? How about a great giveaway from Old Navy for your own Active by Old Navy outfit, including compression tank, running pants and running jacket? The prize is valued at $150 and can be yours, just for leaving a comment below on how you'll stay active this winter.
In the interest of full disclosure, Trend Watch is written by me; all opinions are my own. It is not sponsored. I was given Active by Old Navy tank and pants for review, but I was not compensated for my review.

treadmill and gym baby
spynaert@hotmail.com
these look great. i'm definitely going to go check them out. thanks for the tip!
I love this outfit; great for when I go to the gym.
Doing tae chi, I walk and do yoga. Trying to talk myself into skating again.
I plan on walking and going to the gym
Walking in most weather.....not letting a little drizzle stop me from walking round the blok!
shoveling & shoveling
I walk up and down flights of stairs at work during the winter.
I plan on spending more time indoors at the gym!
I'll spend this winter as every winter - staying active in the pool. I have a seasonal membership at a local fitness facility that I use. I have Rheumatiod arthritis and have "strict orders' from the doctor to do aqua-fit at least a few times a week. I proves to keep me limber and fit...............When I can't get to the pool, I'll be chasing my 3 young children on the snow hills and on the ice rink.
I plan on continuing with yoga and aquafit
Chasing my kids, ages 3 years, 21 months and 6 months old around the house...I wonder how many calories I burn by yelling????
on the treadmill
I have been walking my dog as usual - but have been picking up the pace and walking longer distances. Also......I'm doing my own fall gardening cleanup this year! Yay!!! It's a lot of work as I have a huge yard, but if I pace myself I will get through it.
I'm going to check out this line - I like the colourful jacket!
I have a work out room set up in my house, also, i walk to work everyday also I walk my dog, i have lost 15 pounds so want to keep it off , eating healthy tooo, all this winter
I intend to join aquafit at my gym, had knee surgery last year so it's easier on it. Hopefully if knee improves I'll join the walking club at the running room again. Did it once before and went on a 5k race (walking).
I intend to take daily walks and if it is too cold I will use my stationary bike.
I'm going to continue walking and jogging whenever weather permits. On my off days, I have a Zumba DVD as well as a few fitness video games to keep me going!
Having just had my second baby, I'm trading off kid-watching with a couple other moms so that I can go running at our local indoor track a couple times a week, and walking 3-4 other days a week. Swimming once a week, and pilates or yoga videos at home during nap times a few times a week. Plus chasing a toddler :D
getting back on my treadmill
Treadmill and walking outside when the weather permits!
I hit the gym for a variety of activities, including yoga, pilates, spinning, and the weight room. I mix it up and keep it fresh to avoid boredom
Eliptical for 45 min a day
I'm going to buy myself a set of snowshoes and get out everyday in the fresh air and snow!
i am a nia and pilates girl! i have to say that my hubby came home last night with a long sleeve compression tank and it looks GOOD! like, new zealand all blacks good!!!
Shovelling snow, walking, skating, going to the gym, that's how I stay active in the winter.
Shoveling and taking my dogs for a run in the park. :)
Shovelling the snow, going for walks and heading back to the gym.
We like to go swimming so instead of outdoor pools we'll go to the indoor pools!
I plan to stay active in the winter by working out indoors in my basement where I have a mini gym. I have the music on loud to pump me up, and I will try to do a bit of stationary bike, weights and skipping rope. I hope to be in tip top shape when I come out of hibernation in the Spring.
I'm going to keep using my Wii Fit!
Training for road races by bundling up and heading out for a run.
Chasing my toddler and 6month olds around :)
I'll stay active this winter by walking and doing yoga.
This winter I am going to try the yoga classes at the Aquatic Centre and try to fit swimming into my schedule, thanks for the chance
I could sooo use this prize! I have been diligently walking 5km, 5 days a week since the spring and have lost a great deal of weight - yippee for me! But of course my clothes dont fit now and its depressing to be wearing old, mens gym shorts I got second hand.
I plan to finally get on a regular walking program on my treadmill that's gathering dust.
I had a friend who actually took up snowshoeing last year, and she's convinced me to join in this year!
As I am getting back into working out this would sure come in handy.
Treadmill in the morning and late night walk. Especially like the walk at night after a day of snow falling. The streets are quiet and the trees are beautiful.
I stay active in the winter walking my dogs, doing yoga and aerobics.
I am going to stay active this winter by plugging in my Wii Fit personal Trainer!
I was very lucky, my hubby was hinted that I wanted to exercise but had noontime for the gym, so he went off and got me the Wii! What a sweetheart! Now all I need is workout clothes that I will fit in to workout..if not..it's ...well you do not want to know!
I've been working my way through P90X. I may do it again to keep myself going or try something else!
Skating, tobogganing & snowmobiling (will that keep me active LOL) with the kids - shovelling snow - would love to take up running and what better time to start!
Skating, tobogganing, snowmobiling (does that count as something that keeps you active LOL) with the kids - shovelling the snow and I would love to take up running and what a perfect time to start!
I put the car away for the winter and walk instead.
There's always sidewalks and driveway to remove snow from,it's neverending in the north.I always make time for my daily half-hour of walking as my regular exercise.
KIDS AND DOG...NEED I SAY MORE...ALWAYS GOING, GOING, GOING!!!
I always shovel my driveway myself for extra exercise no need for pumping iron when there is lots of snow!
Shoveling myself out of the driveway will definately keep me active this winter! Plus I plan on getting out for a walk when I can !
ksceviour at hotmail dot com
I try to ride my stationary bike every day, and I walk with our kids to school. The shoveling is also my responsibility and I shovel our neighbour's place too so it can keep me busy. Thanks
This winter i'll stay active by using my treadmill more often
I plan on walking quickly around the arena (there's a track) while my kids are on the ice.
Well I joined a gym and am keeping track of what I eat every day in a food diary. i am not going to let another 5 pounds sneak up on my as I enter 2012!
Walking, walking, walking! And chasing after my busy, busy boy!
I weigh more than I ever have since I was pregnant with twins 15 years ago. Football season is almost over and the boys will soon have all kinds of free time...we'll be spending a lot of time at the gym that we already belong to. I predict that I will look fabulous by February.
I've been going to the gym 4-5 times per week since January. I hadn't been since 8 years earlier, but had some terrible news in my life, and the gym has been my way of releasing some of my stress and angst.
I have a few exercise videos that I enjoy doing in the privacy of my own home. That way I don't have to brave the elements during the winter month.
Doing the Wii Fit every day, I've just completed 500 days without missing a day and dropped 30 lbs. My doctor is so excited!
I walk everyday
I have 5 kids, including 3 that are 4 and younger. They keep me active inside and outside of the house!
Well, with winter being the other half of our year how can one not enjoy it. I have a gf with whom I go night skiing with when her/my children want to go snowboarding. We call, make a date to met and off we go. I also bought a nice pair of snowshoes that I can't wait to try out, and when the snow is good I go crosscountry skiing. I try my darnest to make it every other day. I also signed up for exercise classes 3 times a week in our local township (cheaper then anywhere else, and fun too).
We do so much in the warm months, we all need to enjoy the cold months too.
If only climbing stairs 7 times at the local arena while we are suppost to be watching the kids play hockey...lol.
I know that skinny girl is still inside me somewhere, still trying to bring her out...lol.
I'll be walking on the treadmill as well as doing yoga and hopefully that will help me stay fit.
I get out for a walk with the dog every day. The dog won't let me miss our walk!
I will be popping in a jillian michaels video or bob's yoga.
Funny...I just told my boss TODAY when it's quiet, I'm going to jog around the store...and he said go for it...Winter's coming and want to keep those winter pounds OFF! :D
I have great boots with good non-slip soles, so I walk EVERYWHERE. We live in the city, so I shovel the snow not only on our path and sidewalk but those of two sets of neighbours on either side: 5 houses in all. And I've got wonderful skates with a cozy lining to keep my toes warm, and several outdoor skating rinks in the vicinity. Winter: bring it!
I am 37 weeks pregnant and feel like that bear looks!!! My goal is just to slowly(post c-sect) get back into the swing of things!!!
I'll be using my treadmill, and as long as it isn't stormy I will be going on my weekend hikes.
Our family loves to get out and cross-country ski or snowshoe in the winter.
I'll be using the gym in my condo more often
We have a corner property and find during the winter shoveling our sidewalk is a good and tiring workout. But i also try to go for walks on the cold days bundled up and let that cold air wake me up.
I just starting selling Avon so instead of ordering just enough books for my family and friends, I now order 30 more books and start walking. I try to target a new area each time which does two things, it gets me off the couch and boosts my Avon sales when I get a new customer!!
Looks nice and yogalishish! Love the thumb holes and that makes me want to try this product! Thanks for the "heads-up"
I forgot to add to my previous post that I stay active by doing yoga and working out (ok I intend to get back to working out)
Is it sad that I'll be keeping active this winter between work, and taking the kids to dance and indoor soccer? I will try to throw some yoga into the mix, just for me :)
A few years ago, a friend of mine and I decided to take up snow-shoeing. Now it's an addiction! We live in Northern Ontario which is perfect for snow-shoeing. There are tons of walking/hiking trails (complete with some lung-buster hills) to get a great workout. The last couple of years, I've also done some night-time snowshoeing - put on a headlamp and away we went shoeing the trails around our local ski hill. A couple of nights we even went UP the main hill! Now THAT was a killer (but awesome) workout. Bring on the snow! :)
instead of walking outside I use my trusty treadmill. it beats facing the winter cold.
I go to the gym at work after I eat my lunch for about 30 mins. I do 10 minutes on the treadmill, and then switch to floor exercises. It gets me away from the desk and i got my exercise for the day.
I'll be attending Pilates and Yoga classes.
I stay active by walking as much as possible during the winter months.
I do yoga, go up and down the stairs in my building (I live on the 7th floor) and get bundled up to take my dog for daily walks.
I will keep up with my daily walks, no matter what the weather. For the really bad days I'll go and do a few laps around the mall.
I walk at least 30 minutes a day at a very brisk pace, I cover about 3 km or more. I will be walking in cold weather too; however, when the sidewalks are covered in snow I will be using my recumbant bike at home.
I go swimming at lunch everyday, even in the winter, and run outside no matter what! NO EXCUSES! I also enjoy winter activities such as skating, skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing!!! I pretty see what mother nature gives me and change it up, a key part of working out is keeping it fun and interesting and keeping boredom far away!
We are purchasing a treadmill so we can walk/run indoors when it's -30 outside!
Samson & Delilah Take me out for walks twice daily. As I keep forgetting things on different floors of my house I am up and down stairs a lot. Also no car, so I tend to walk as much as possible to do my errands before taking transit and the new Sketchers I won in a contest not too long ago really make that more enjoyable!!
I am lucky and have a Gym in my building at work, so rather than taking my lunch and coffee breaks i take one long break and go to the gym for a workout at lunch, we do step classes, core workouts, spin and stretch classes and i pretty much go every day monday - friday. The classes are 45 mins long and then i have 15 min to shower and get back to my desk. I usually eat a quick sandwich at my desk while working. Getting away the the sedatary position in front of the computor is great and i usually feel so great after my workout.
To keep active this winter, I will continue to walk my oldest son to school while pushing a stroller through the snow.
Also, I have a job that keeps me active.
I plan to run on the indoor track near us.
I just bought an elliptical machine from a garage sale and I plan on using that while watching tv. Win-win!
I like to use my in-door walking videos.
I am taking a tap class to keep active through the winter.
I purchased hiking poles for my summer hikes and learned how to use them for Nordic Walking. I now intend to remove the rubber tips, expose the spikes and continue to use them on my winter walks.
I plan on walking the two puppies more often
I stay active by walking my dog in the local trails, rain or shine!
I am starting to get active again to start to feel good about myself so I can enjoy my time with my kids my daughter(11) is also joining me!!!
I have four kids that have to walk to school, 2 dogs that need to be walked and I also am in university where I have to walk to. My day consist of walking the kids to school, walking myself to school, then picking the kids up from school and walking home. After supper I go back out so my dogs can get their walk. This is the same in the coldest weather.
Wow, that picture of the bear is a little too close to home! This winter, I plan to keep active by taking a daily 45-60 minute walk. I find the winter is an excellent time to get out there, as long as you are bundled up well. The best thing is: you don't have to worry about your hair (put on a hat!) or what exactly you are wearing (anything comfortable!) because you will be all covered up. I love that!! :-)
I take out Leslie Sansone DVDs from the library and work out in my basement after the kids have gone to bed. I also try and take the stairs more than the elevator at work
When it is too cold or icy outside, Wii Fit and Yoga are my friends...it really does help too as I did it all winter last year and didn't gain a pound;0)
I bought a treadmill, so I will hopefully get alot of use out of it!!
I'm just going to keep walking this winter...whenever I try something crazy hard I give up, so I think slow and steady is the best plan for the colder months.
I like to stay active by snowshoeing and skiing.
I have a gaming console and a gazillion dance games that I love! I work up quite a sweat and barely notice because I'm having so much fun. I've even roped my husband into having dance-offs with me. He's not usually much of a dancer, but if points are involved...game on!
I will do aquafit.
I already do my weight/cardio circuits indoors but this year my friend is vowing to teach me how to snowboard!
I stay active by running.
I plan to still stay walking at least 4 times a week, and once a week be involved with a recreational team sport once a week. For walking in the winter I just bundle up to -- if it's way too cold I will go to the mall and walk (this is usually only three - four days in an entire season)!!!
This winter I plan on waking up early, walking on my treadmill for a while, before walking my daughters to school instead of driving. Also, I'll be exchanging exercise videos with friends, then doing one of them twice a week to shake things up a little ;)
I have an active bra from Old navy and its great for support. It was a great price too!
I'm staying active by going on my elliptical at home, and doing other at home workouts!
I'll be continuing to work out on our Bowflex and our treadmill.
My kids love the winter! We are always outside after dinner and on weekends doing something. Going for walks, tobboganing, building snowmen. They can't get enough of it and neither can I.
I go to the gym 5 days a week.
I want to start up skating, I think that would be a fun way to stay active this winter.
I'm going to stay active by going for winter walks and shoveling snow!
I am planning on staying active this winter and hopefully increasing my fitness level by joining a pilates class, increasing amount of walking and possibly investing in some exercise equipment so that regardless of weather, I can get a good work out.
I have 2 small children and a new puppy .I really need get active and get out walking . Winter is no time to stay indoors. I would love to win some new get active clothes
I walk just about everywhere. I prefer a really cold winter so I don't constantly get "slushed" by inconsiderate drivers so I dress warmly and go out there. A sunny day in winter is one of the best things in life!
I stay active by going to the gym 3 days a week and using my Wii Fit at home.
I have installed a tv and dvd in the exercise room. The kids and I can enjoy watching movies while working out!
I have an elliptical at home & hope to use it this winter.
I'll be pregnant this winter, so I'll be attempting to stay active with some at-home prenatal yoga. Chasing around my 2 year old is quite the workout as well! :)
No matter what type of weather it is outside. I will always do my walks or runs outside, I love the fresh air! Love to win new gear.
Started doing hot yoga this year, so will keep that up along with dog walks. We're thinking about taking the kids downhill skiing for the first time this year, too. And, of course, tubing is always fun!
I will stay active by daily walks of 1/2 hr 2 x a day, once at lunch at work and once with my dogs after dinner, also a 1 hour walk with the dogs on Saturdays. Weekly jazz fit classes and weekly aquafit classes. Also the running around of my 7 yr old to all her activities.
I have a second, part time job which keeps me moving... On the weekends I tracked that I walked 10km in one day; I do at least that in the evenings every other weekday. That keeps me active and moving and feeling healthy. Thanks!
I walk/run on my treadmill and I watch tv while doing so!
I would love to win this as I plan to do a lot of walking this fall!
I run.
I go to Curves 3 times a week and just pulled down the treadmill to use on off days.
Also I have a border collie that insists we go for walks daily
i have a treadmill
I'll be hitting the indoor community track for walks and runs with the little guy in our jogging stroller. I plan to go at least 2 times a week for an hour each time, that's usually a 5km hike or so.
I"ll stay active this winter by using my PS3 Move Controllers to play games that are physical and fun. My favourite right now is a boxing game, it's a great stress reliever too! I'm also looking forward to doing some outdoor ice skating this winter with friends and family!
When it gets too cold we walk the floors and stairs at work for a midday exercise break. I also use a treadmill at home.
I take the stairs at work & try to not sit at my desk for long periods of time. Also keep the temperature cool in the house so that it encourages me to do jumping jacks or running in place while I wait for the water to boil or the shower to get hot ;)
i bought an ab circle pro, its great way to stay in shape
I have started doing Zumba twice a week! They are offering it at my daughters' rural school. I absolutely love it because twice a week, I don't have to put the kids to bed...I get to go out by myself, and now that I'm getting the hang of the dances, I feel pretty sexy!
I will stay active on my treadmill.
Kickboxing is my regular sport, but my buddy can't do it anymore do it anymore because of an arm injury. Therefore we have decided to branch out in our hunt for a fun way to stay fit (and let me tell you, hitting stuff is GREAT stress relief!). This winter's agenda includes pole dancing classes (starting this Thursday into December) followed Tribal style bellydancing (January until?). We find that if you buddy up in your fitness, you can encourage each other to go, and it makes it more fun. We've been working out together for 8 years now, and it has sure worked well for us! :)
This winter, I will be shovelling all that heavy snowfall to come.
This winter I intend to stay active by mixing up my activities. I tend to get bored with just jogging, or just yoga. Also, I plan to learn how to hula hoop with my bestie, and I'm also going to try Bikram Yoga! :)
This winter, I plan to do lunchtime walks, with my fellow co-worker. We will bundle up and walk for at least 30 minutes every workday. I have found a Zumba class at the local community center and plan to check it out.
I will stay active this winter by taking walks. Biking more instead of driving the car. Trying out a yoga class.
This might sound crazy but I'm going to get a membership to an indoor dog park. It's great fun and should keep me somewhat toned when the weather gets bad outdoors.
I plan on using my elliptical that I bought at a garage sale this year.
I'm going to start my water aerobic classes.
Aquafit is the answer for me. It is fun and works. I will be alternating it with a membership at the gym.... Bikini here I come
With snow just around the corner, I'll once again be pulling my kids on their sled, tobogganing, skating and of course shovelling snow. Through all that I plan on doing yoga. Happy : )
Walking outdoors when I can, and when the weather is bad, walking inside at the local track. Also playing Wii Fit games with my kids helps!!
I will stay active this winter trudging through the snowy sidewalks, pulling my toddler on her sled, making snowmen, building forts, tobogganing and shovelling it too of course! :)
I'll be learning skiing so that will keep me entertained and active
I just got a gym membership and I want to attend fitness classes.
We have a long winter with snow and ice. I can deal with the snow but not so much, the ice. So I purchased a treadmill during a great summer sale. No excuses left!
i have started to do alot of walking, yoga and pilates. trying to get back into shape, it has been a few years and after 3 kids i know my body can use it.
I try to walk 3-4 days a week at lunch for 30 mins. I also get my kids outside as well as our dog.
I like parking as far away as possible when going to shop at malls or grocery stores. This way I get in more walking and especially on the way bag, I'm carrying all the stuff I bought - so it's a bit of more resistance and strength training.
Snowboarding, Iceskating, Exercise Outdoors, Yoga and Pilates indoors, Use my Gym Equipment in my Home Gym for Cardio workout, Motivate myself to eat healthy, Eat lots of Fiber, Use WiiFit, Download a playlist onto my IPod and listen to the music while cleaning house, getting dressed or doing chores.
I will be staying active this summer by taking care of my new born daughter who is due any day now! Anyone with a child knows that I will be up and on the go constantly and I have always been a very healthy person who will be determined to get my pre-baby body back ASAP! :)
I will stay active by working in the community, and parking a block away from my place of work. Each time I have to make a visit, I will be wending a path throught he snow and the shivering alone should drop 10 pounds!
Walking, Walking, Walking. And of course shoveling!
ack! i thought i posted! my hubby brought some home for himself before you posted this and i had to get in on the action. the compression shirt made him look like a kiwi all-black! ;-)
i bought a men's small longsleeve for myself and the medium long compression pants and they're fantastic! i want more. i stay active by curling and doing pilates at the rec centre.
I am trying to take my dog out walking twice per day, even when it gets colder. Its good for both of us and I also need the vitamin D from the sun to make it through the winter!
I like walking all year long, and in the winter like downhill skiing at our local hill. These are my favourite active choices.
I will try to take my dog for a walk more often and help my husband clean the snow.
probably by shoveling snow - but hopefully more so by having nice walks
I plan to walk a lot this winter and hopefully start swimming at the community pool
I will do as I always do and walk, walk, walk. Nothing better for a clear crisp day.
I will stay active this winter by chasing my kids, riding my stationary bike and working out with turbo fire!
daily walks, at least one
I love Zumba. I went and got a licence, so now I can also teach. I love doing my routines at home in the basement, at least 2 hours a few times a week. When I am working on a new routine I do the same song 20 times, it takes a lot of effort, but in the end it's fun.
I also do belly-dance, it's great for posture, tonning and grace.
I have "Girls' Night" at least once a month when I invite some other friends interested in Zumba and belly-dance. Sometimes my daughters join us, too. We make new routines, practice new moves, learn from each other , youtube or DVDs. We finish with dinner and a drink, of course. And my dear husband drives the girls home!
I also go to the gym to do a little resistance training and Zumba and belly dance classes.
We love hiking in the snowy woods and skating at our local outdoor rink. My kids will be playing indoor soccer and judo!
More snowboarding this year -- I'm hoping to actually 'learn' it this year!
Hit the gym right on the way home from work!
I stay active by running around after my kids
Running solo and skating with my kids
To stay active, I always put in my favorite workout DVD at least 3 times a week, and in the winter, I love ice skating, hiking through the woods, snowshoeing, and maybe the odd day of skiing! Winter is a great time to be active!
I have an active family with extra curricular activities every day after school and at weekends; I work as a substitute educational assistant; am renovating a house; have 2 dogs to walk; all the hosework that the previous create ... and am now off to chase leaves around the yard in the hope that I can get them in the composting bin.
